A whole new world on hold

I recently promised myself that I wouldn't post to LJ again until I had some good things to say. That hasn't been working so well because it's only meant I haven't been posting at all. So, I'll try to put some good stuff in this entry along with the frustrating things ( Read more... )

I picked up the elementary schools' September lunch menu for Ian last week. What excited me most about the school lunch calendar, other than a decent assortment of healthy foods, was the last week. "September 24-28 Celebrate Masachusetts Harvest For Students *Bold items are locally grown."

Wow! Color me all sorts of impressed! Locally grown carrots, corn on the cob, potatoes, butternut squash, cranberries, apples, tomatoes, salad greens, blueberries, and veggies in vegetable soup? In *school* lunch? I think we've moved to the right place!

Actually, according to Kingsolver's book, there are 31 states now implementing local food programs in their schools. Pretty cool! (especially considering what us Reagan-era kids had to eat for school lunch)

I'm curious. Have you read the book, Kira-Kira? It was a 2005 Newbery Book, supposodly for 11-14 year olds. Well it was so depressing for me and made me cry a lot. :( I wouldn't want 11 year olds reading it. I wanted to throw it across the room.

I read Kira-Kira when it first came out. I actually really liked it, but found that I couldn't read it in the hospital waiting room (waiting for S's mom to come out of surgery). We picked the book as the middle school selection for a town-ride read in my last job and the kids seemed to like it, too. But, I agree...it is sad.
