I think my water has a fever

Yesterday I hiked to the supermarket, across vast expanses of ice, to buy yeast. I had the strongest desire to bake bread even though I had never baked with yeast before. I figured if I was stuck inside for most of the day I might as well bake.

I have a wonderful baking cookbook by Abigail Dodge called The Weekend Baker. In the book there is a ( Read more... )

That does look good! The only time I baked bread was in High School--my brother worked at a health food store and they had recipes you could take. I picked the Pita Bread one. Followed the recipe, put it the oven and then threw out the "stupid flat bread that didn't bake right". Slap to the head when I found out what Pita bread was, and that it was exactly what it should have been.

That's hysterical! At least you know (now) that you followed the recipe correctly.

The thermometer probably only has a range where the reading is displayed. Probably to prevent little kiddies from using a light bulb to heat it up in order to stay home from school. If you are going to keep baking bread it's time for a cooking thermometer. Plus using the one you use when you sick to cook. EEEEEWWWWWWWW!!

The bread does look good. I made bread when I lived in Hanover a lot. Cuz really what else does one do in Hanover in the winter?

I cleaned the thermometer first! But, you're right...we need a cooking thermometer. We had registered for one, but didn't get it. And we still haven't used our gift cards to finish out the registries. It's probably time to do that.

Baking bread is good. I knitted. And drank wine ;)

Omigosh, it looks GREAT!!! You'll have to teach me how to make it -- I'm *very* bad with yeast and always manage to kill it off. (I do the same with plants -- do you think they're related?)

It was relatively easy. We should have a bread-baking day!

I think I just gained weight simply reading your baking list for the week! The bread looks delish and everything else sounds so yummy!

And I ate all that stuff! My weight-loss is a bit off track at the moment. I need it to not be winter now.
