This afternoon I discovered my new favorite electronic music genre; or rather, I discovered the name for a style of music I have enjoyed on occasion, but lacked a way to categorize it. Now I do: it's called Deep House.
Why the appeal? The jazzy breaks, the soft overtones, a kind of vibe, soul, that either conjures lazy summer afternoons or a quiet evening in a hip cocktail bar; like its cousin 'downtempo', but smoother; like 'chillout' but with a pulse, something other than a choir of 'ooohs' and 'aaahs' and washy synths. Here, sample it:

Its status as a pleaser was cemented, when upon this most glorious of spring afternoons, I set myself up on the deck in the garden with my laptop and desk, put on a mix of Deep House I'd just discovered, and spent three hours at work writing some new fiction. Ah it was bliss, I tell you. Thank you Spring. Thank you Deep House.
Seriously, I can't get enough of this stuff. Anybody feel free to send some my way. xxx
