I thought of my father-in-law who stepped out of a job site to go to his van one cold winter day. When he didn't return after a time, our friend, Mark, went to check on him and found him collapsed in the parking lot. He died alone, and it was such a hard thing to bear for his family.

My sisters and I weren't able to get to Texas before my dad died (it was pretty sudden) but I've always been happy that my step-sister was there, telling him we were on our way. I never knew her well, but I always think of her now as doing a kindness for all of us, dad and my sisters and me.
