I don't think it's such an obvious answer--wikipedia says that it's a book or film which gains unexpected success--like no one expected it to do any good business, but it does.
It's also a more 'slang' term for a car that is muuuuuuuch faster than it looks. A rust bucket 70's Camaro maybe able to outrun a brand new Solstice even though the Solstice looks muuuch faster.
If it is in ref to a book or movie, it usally means that the critics hated it and it didn't stir any interest before release, but the public loved it anyways, and it became a box office hit.
