Hrmph. Now I have to look up what "comportment" means. laminator_x October 1 2005, 00:15:40 UTC
Sounds like things are going reasonably well. Good to hear.

ProTools seminar sounds fun. You'll be surprised by how many visual metaphors are use to describe tha character of sound. Our auditory vocabulary is sorely underdeveloped. Working with effects always reminds me of sailing. You make these little changes with the controls and you feel the results as the waves move around and through you, changing over time.

yeah. i was really amazed at how developed her auditory sensitivity was. she could hear little blips that i just couldnt pick up even after listening several times and watching it on the screen.

we dont realize how powerful that sense is (potentially), because so much of our input is taken up by the visual (and also because the world, esp in cities, is so damn loud). i also was reminded of this watching joan of arc (the silent one), without even musical accompaniment. when we turned the sound on after, it made such a huge difference in how you read the visuals, which alone are dramatic, but subtle. (apologies for poor grammatical expression, its late).

Our hearing also tells us all sorts of thing we don't even realize. I'll tell you The Secret of Reverb (if your teacher hasn't already done so, she sounds cool).

It starts with the Early Reflections, sound that bounces once off a nearby surface. The amount of early reflections that you hear tells you how reflective nearby surfaces are. If the ER's arrive right after the direct/unreflected sound, the sound source is farther away than the reflecting surfaces. For every foot closer the source is to the listenner than the reflecting surface, there's ~1.1ms of delay before the ER's arrive (speed of sound ~1200ft/s)

Next come the Echoes, reflections that just bounce once or twice before reaching the listenner but travel a longer path than the early reflections. In a small space, the echoes come right behind the ER's, in a big space there's more delay before their arrival. Again, you can use the speed of sound to determine exactly how much delay if you want to mimic a specific space. I usually just go big room=more time/small room= ( ... )

hey thanks. that explains all those settings on the plug-in, so i can actually manipulate them more consciously and consistantly. hurrah!

i will probably aks you more later about EQ.... i still only get it a little.

I made a mistake in that bit abour pre-delay for early reflections. The ERs will arrive one milisecond after the direct sound for every 1.1 feet (roughly) difference between the distance the reflection travels and the distance the direct sound travels.

Of course, I almost never calculate that unless I'm mimicing a specific place. :)
