I just finished reading Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott on Thursday evening, which I enjoyed the heck out of. It's a book about writing, but it's also a book about learning to be still and really look, really see the world and distill it in your writing, about learning to see the truth clearly and to write it as best you can. Y'know, I like them better now, but I think that is in no small part because I know that I am LEAVING THEM. Cute boy was a fun time but we are definitely not going to end up dating! Eh well. :)

I read Pilgrim at Tinker Creek in high school too, and hated it, but it's weird how a lot of stuff from it has really stuck with me--more than has from some of the books I really enjoyed. I don't think I'd hate it so much if I reread it now. And one of my best friends gave me Bird by Bird when we graduated high school! Isn't it good?

I felt an irresistible urge to comment on the similarity of our reading lists. ^_^

I somehow completely missed this comment a million weeks ago! It was when I was super busy at work, but dude, I do not even remember reading the LJ notification email. Bizarre as heck. Totally agreed re: would probably like Pilgrim at Tinker Creek much more now than did as a high school senior, and obviously agree that Bird by Bird was fab. Have you read anything else by Anne Lamott? Turns out my mother has read another one of her books, and that the autobiographical stuff is meant to be excellent.
