I've been reading a lot of Merlin fic, as one does, a good bit of which has been modern day AU. I really love modern day Merlin AUs. (There are four fics in particular that I love like burning; two of them are still WIPs, though, so I think I'll save that rec post till they're done.) The amount of Merlin fic I have been reading lately is absolutely insane. I have this insane need to delicious everything I read and the mere numbers astound me. I haven't across too many modern AUs - Drastically Redefining Protocol obvs. and Woods For The Trees by hacthis.

I did just finish (well, of all the last chapter that hasn't been posted) a delightful girl!Merlin fic by greensilver.

DRP is clearly on my list! I really liked Woods for the Trees, though it doesn't make my list. Okay, fine, my list:

1. DRP, which obviously you have read :)
2. Easy There by syllic (WIP) -- the one where they are at Oxford and row crew
3. Be Resigned by franticsga (WIP) -- the one where they are in the U.S. Air Force, no really, just read it if you haven't
4. I'll Be the Platform Shoes (title of which I do not consider to fit with the story at ALL) by raphaela667 -- the one where Arthur is in Parliament and Merlin is his PA

I have not given girl!Merlin a chance yet! Hmm.

I was really wary of girl!Merlin but I liked the author and so I gave it a shot and I really like it now. It's just...I don't know. Clearly different, but I think what it comes down to is that they are still Arthur and Merlin, whatever genders they happen to be.

OH GOD, footballer!AU. I want to be British so I can write it, because I'm fairly sure that Mexican footballer culture is different (even if we do get our brand of hooligans and a LOT of national frenzy). BUT OMG PLEASE LET IT BE WRITTEN! it sounds AWESOME. I'm SO into modern day AU's in Merlin, too, they may be my favorites (are 'Kingdom of the Blaggers' and 'Drastically Redifining Protocol' in your top 4? *is curious*)

And, WOW, your WIPs. How they tease me.

Kingdom of the Blaggers isn't, actually! Although I did really enjoy it, and also it had ARI GOLD, who is my love! I just wish it hadn't been established relationship (because I am kind of addicted to that moment of REALIZATION and then the first kiss/hook-up/etc.) and also that it'd been longer -- there were parts I thought it read like notes for a longer story. (Uh, a very very long story.) Drastically Redefining Protocol does make the list, though it too had some pacing issues in the last bit, IMO; still, I love that story so stupidly much I could not even consider leaving it off the list. (The list is actually here, because I am kind of a pushover. I'm still going to repost it when the two WIPs on it are done.)

I must admit that when I pictured Merlin in a sports AU, he was the assistant coach or whatever and not on the actual team. I think it's because he's so clumsy that I honestly fear for the his (and everyone's) safety if they let him near something that could potentially cause injury, like a soccer ball. Or any kind of ball.

(being hit in the face with a real soccer ball hurts a lot. If I didn't have my Asian button nose, it would probably have been broken.)

I have not gotten hit in the face by a soccer ball in quite a long time! I last seriously played in elementary school. Whoops.
