it's poll wednesday!

I ALWAYS seem to post polls when I'm at my internship. So! I was talking about this with walkawayslowly recently, and I'm curious about your writing habits. I am VERY FIRMLY in one of these categories, and Merrin is VERY FIRMLY in the other. You can only pick one, but feel free to elaborate in the comments, if you want.

Poll because i wonder about these thingsSo sometimes I have overlap, but ( Read more... )

I picked the first, though I don't know that the two are mutually exclusive, for me.

I totally accidentally posted the entry before I WROTE IT, ahaha. They aren't really for me either necessarily, but I just explained above now that I actually wrote the thing. :D

Usually, the plot ideas that come to me, shape themselves into things I'd want to read as they get written! :)

Yeah! Because you're MAKING THEM AWESOME THROUGH WRITING THEM, if that makes sense.

I think the very best writing that you can do is the writing that you're inspired for. Otherwise, my work just turns out mediocre and not very good at all. Certainly nothing worth spending so much time on.

Oh, for sure, you definitely want that push of "I MUST WRITE THIS STORY," either way. I was just curious as to where the genesis of that push is, if that makes any sense at all. :D

hmm. I wonder if I read this differently. Like, the first option, the stories I want to read - I didn't pick that because when I get an idea for a story I'd like to read, I want somebody to write it *for* me. It's not as much fun, I feel, if I write the story myself.

No, that's totally how I meant it! (At least I THINK SO.) Like -- if it's a story you want to read, you just want it to EXIST ALREADY, no effort necessary! Because yeah, that is exactly how I feel about this whole thing, and is why I am in Category Number Two. :D

I write the stories that pop into my head, whether it's from a prompt, challenge, or random idea. I enjoy writing them, but I usually don't re-read them after they're posted. It's never occurred to me to write a fic that I'd like to read. LOL.

Yeah! Y'know, now I'm trying to think if there's EVER been a story I've written that's been like, "Man, I really want to read about Sam giving Dean a blowjob in the Impala. I KNOW! I'LL WRITE IT." I don't think there has been! I just want those fics to EXIST ALL OF A SUDDEN, like magic!

That's really interesting about you not rereading! I reread a LOT. Not all of my fic, not by a long shot, but there are some that I've gone back to a bunch. I like to think it's just because sometimes I want to know EXACTLY what I am getting myself into, but it might also be my rampant egotism at play. :\ I'd be curious to see what the fandom breakdown is like for rereading your own fic! Maybe that will be my next Random Poll. :D

I've re-read a few times, but not often, and there are some that I haven't read at all since they were posted. (Oddly enough, I can re-read my two major J2 fics a lot easier than I can read my Sam/Dean fics). I feel weird when I read them, mainly overly critical. I'll think, "ick, I should have changed that, or redone that, or why did I think that was a good idea?!?" Then I just get paranoid, lol. If I'm proud of a fic, I want to stay that way, and remember it fondly with nostalgia instead of nit-picking it. I probably sound crazy now! :D

No, that makes total sense! I just reread my (lone) SGA story the other day, and was like, "I really want to fix that line of dialogue, and that line of summary!" and stuff like that the whole way through -- but overall I still like nearly everything I've written (ahaha, in SPN. NOT in HP.) enough that I really enjoy rereading it.
