Family Background: Gilles is the middle child of the Caulmont family. He looks up to Thomas, but he’s closer to his younger sister, Jeanne. Gilles and Jeanne shared the nursery together after their brother started his studies.

Family background: Jeanne was the youngest child of Alexandre and Louise de Caulmont, the Count and Countess of Sudme. She had two older brothers, Thomas born in 1101 and Gilles born in 1104. . The Caulmonts were a close family, but they were also very ambitious. Once it became clear that the King was interested in young Jeanne, Alexandre used that to his advantage. When Jeanne became Queen, she convinced her husband to appoint her brother’s to positions of power and to arrange advantageous marriages for her female relations.
