[Mal is basically using her communicator like a Dictaphone, thinking out loud at it while she paces. If you listen carefully you can hear her moving about, and occasionally you might hear a soft clink of metal on metal-the sound of her playing with her totemSo that is a "breach", then? I am not sure that I like it any better or worse than the other ( Read more... )

I... think most people would be. To have another person's life in your hands.

And that was a far better story than the one the man I was had invented in his head.

Sorry about that, by the way.

[Mal actually laughs at that-kindly, though; she's not making fun of Eddie.]

It's all right. She was horrified and really quite upset, but I-well, let us simply say that I can see a certain amount of humour in it.

What is your name when you're your rightful self?

He was just... very desperate for a story, I think, and asked a lot of questions, but never the right ones.

Same as before, Eddie Russett. And yours?

Oh yeah, I'm definitely still haunted by the memories I had as this other person. For him the West was a symbolic - and literal - escape.

Escape from what? If you do not mind my asking, that is.

Slavery...though, it had finally been stopped by this point, the man I was still lived through it.

Oh.

Yes, I see that the frontier would be preferable, in that case.

Yes. I am haunted by D. I wish he would go away.

There was nothing of value for you in the experience, I take it.

I...

...didn't say that.

I merely had a first taste of emotions I would rather have not experienced.

I see. I apologise; I didn't mean to misinterpret.

Aye, you can, as long as you keep your totem with you. [pause] As well as promise not to jump.

I am never without it these days. And believe me, jumping holds no appeal for me now.

Thank you.

I assumed as much. I will make the request immediately.

May I answer the question you posed to the Barge populace, or would you rather not hear from your warden?

It's your choice. It was-well, not an idle question, really, but it's open to all.

I think a lot of people are haunted by the similarities in their own lives. It would be a whole lot easier to understand if the Admiral could tell us what exactly happened.

He doesn't seem forthcoming with explanations, does he?

Or warnings. At least he usually tells us when there's a flood.

Have you experienced one of these before?
