Yup, they were male - apparently the area that they're from host a great deal of maneless male lions. I didn't know there were adult male lions without manes, but... the more you know!
Huh, maybe lacking the gene to produce the mane has increased the chance of maneating behavior. Since female lions dig males with big manes, these males couldn't get a pride to feed them and so went for a easy prey-humans.
