Possible shutdown of the US gov't

Apr 06, 2011 11:03

The United States government is bracing for a possible government shutdown.

I was not even sure that was possible. How does a government shut down? It last happened in 1995, and it lasted for a duration of 3 weeks.

What to expect when you're expecting when the government is possibly going to shut down ( Read more... )

I really hope so as well. It should not have been allowed to come to this point in the first place. I was wondering if we'd have a problem like this back when the Democrats lost the House.

Wha-huh? I'm confused, why is it shutting down?O.o Can they do that? *does not understand American politics*

Surprised there was nothing about it on the news over here, we usually keep a fairly close eye on what's happening across the pond.O.o Hope they cop on.:/

That was pretty much my reaction when I first heard about this ;^; Those links are pretty helpful though, if you want to trawl through them. The quick version is that Congress can't come to a decision about the federal budget, and no compromise by Saturday = good-bye government.

I'm glad you got to hear about it through my journal entry, at least c: Thanks for your concern >_>;

Ughhh, I posted a question about the government shutdown for our mandatory class questions on my US Institutions course, but then was sick on the lesson so I didn't actually get to hear the answer. It was basically 'what exactly does a government shutdown entail?' Thank you for links, now I'll have a place to start studying this independently (once it's not one thirty in the morning). And hope things work out.

XD Woooow.

But coming from a state that already has furlough Fridays for public schools (and sometimes Mondays) I can understand :P

I loathe the furlough Fridays; robbing students of their education is not going to help the country in the long run. *fumes*

"We meet them halfway, they say no. We meet them more than halfway, they still say no. We meet them all the way, they still say no. If Republicans were really worried about keeping the government running, all they would have to do is say yes." - CBC News

Yikes. It kinda just sounds like this is a ploy to screw over the Democrats once and for all. Why do they need to bring down the country to do it though?

How frustrating D:

/squishes ;~;

I'm hesitant to lay the blame square on the Republicans, because I really try not to do that (despite being a Democrat.) Speaker of the House J. Boehner (who is Republican) said that he didn't want to force a decision between a government shutdown and a federal budget that would eventually fail. I just hope they can get their act together before Saturday for the good of the country.

Thanks for being concerned c: It really warms my heart to know that people still look out for us! > w > (Or at least, keep an eye on us XD)
