While the Cat's Away....

Just a quick note to let you know that I was away on a cruise last week, but am now back. It was a cruise out of Puerto Rico, stopping in Aruba, Curacao, St. Thomas and St. Maarten. It was nice, but my son got very sick towards the end of the cruise and we spent a lot of time in the medical unit (acute tonsillitis, high fever, severe ear ( Read more... )

So sorry your son was ill, hope he's OK now. Having kids sick on holiday is always horrible especially when you are so far from home.

Thanks. Yes, it was rather distressing and upsetting, as he ran a very high fever for 3 days and the cruise ship doctors insisted on a course of action that we hadn't experienced here in the states. They put him on an IV of a high powered antibiotic 2X per day. They made the situation seem relatively serious. I still can't really figure out if there was some level of overreaction or overcompensation on thier part - it was hard to tell because of the language differences (they spoke English, of course, but still had different thinking than American doctors). Thankfully I was able to have them talk to our pediatricians. It's just a very helpless feeling on a ship like that. The medical resources were very well equipped, but you worry about complications that would exceed their capabilities.

In any case, he is recovering well now although his throat seems to be lingering with the pain.

Sorry such a great trip was curtailed by your son's illness and all the ensuing anxiety. Hope he is fully better soon. The ship looks fabulous. I've always fancied going on a sightseeing sea cruise one day ... but am waiting until Mr T and I can go without the kids. :-/

Hope your son is much better now. In my whole life I have never felt as sick as when I got Tonsilitus at age 13 or 14. (Temp 103F)

Anyway just being in his own home does wonders. Your pics are very nice.

Hope you got a chance to visit the Old San Juan, I'd love to see your photos from there.

Wishing your boy a speedy recovery!

Ah, I forgot you were there! Actually we didn't do any sightseeing in San Juan. We came in Sat night and left Sunday morning for the cruise.

Oh, how bad...

The old section of San Juan has plenty of beautiful/interesting spots. You could have done a gorgeous pics collection.

The one you took from the hotel is amazing!

I would have loved to have had the chance to explore and photograph San Juan. Unfortunately when traveling with a group you have to go with the group's schedule. This is why I prefer traveling alone! I can see and do what I want!

The heart? OMG you are scaring me! I thought he was improving but his throat is still very sore. It is about 6 days now since the start of all of this...

OK, you freaked me out so I went and did some reading. I think you are referring to STREP related tonsillitis, which it is said can lead to damage to the heart, if untreated. He was tested for strep and that was negative. Also, he has received high levels of antibiotics while on the ship (5 IVs of Rocephin) and is now on Augmenten.

I just wish he would get better!
