I finally saw Slumdog Millionaire. It's a good story that's directed well. They really capture the chaos of childhood and the melodrama of adolescence. The thing that really impressed me, though, was the subtitles

The first film to do this was Night Watch and it caused a big love it or hate it stir at the time. That was also Fox Searchlight. I think they're the only company doing this.

I haven't seen night watch. I guess I have to now. While the execution of anything will be debatable, at least somebody is trying. Why not make your subtitles as much an artistic expression as the rest of your movie? They already do stuff with the opening titles.
