Lol yeah, we also registered as being atheist so as to avoid the Kirchensteuer (or however that's spelled.
Josh got a bit annoyed until I explained that it was the easiest way to avoid having to give tax money to the catholic church.
It's bad enough Bavaria is run by a bloody Christian party, let alone letting the church have any of my cents, kind of my way of sticking it to the establishment that burned all those poor folks up at the Dom.
When I registered at the Gemeindeamt, they just asked "Katholisch oder Evangelisch," to mark me down for what tax I would have to pay, and I said, "Ohne Religion," and got very dirty looks. Before that they just put me down as "Katholisch" by default and I got these horrendous Kirchensteuer bills which I refused to pay, so the church was threatening to take away my furniture until I called up some civil servant and screamed over the phone, "Ich bin nicht katholisch!!!!!"
A friend tried to get out of it by saying she was Buddhist, then the local Buddhist community sent her stuff in the post hitting her up for money.
I'd be surprised if you weren't contacted by the Bamberg Atheisten demanding protection money. ;)
