So I realize this is tough to look at, but the idea seemed good at the time. Maybe I'll re-do at some point. ANYWAY, an AU related to my sadness over the end of Almost Human, which I was really enjoying. The gifs illustrate the fic. For a challenge at
tv_universe to pay tribute to a cancelled show; in this case, a bit of a fix-it.
Decommissioned
Kennex knew it was bad before he got to the door of the office; he'd seen Maldonaldo's expression through the layers of glass, and he just knew. Once he sat down, it was like he couldn't focus on the meaning, just the words shooting out around his head: "sorry," "out of my hands," "over my head," "screw-up," "desk duty," "decommissioned," "DECOMMISSIONED." And finally, as he pushed himself standing and moved toward the door, a sick feeling rising in his throat, her voice following him: "Kennex! Don't do anything stupid. You don't know what they can do, and they won't just stop at Dorian."
As he strode between the desks, he passed once-familiar faces, but all he could see in his mind were the flashes of the machines that could give life and memories, or take them away. And he knew what he had to do.

"John. We don't have to do this. You'd be giving up everything, your life here, your career. And for what? Once I get...deactivated, it's not like I'll know anything. I....it'll be nothing. It'll be okay."
Kennex stared into the distance. "Wrong. We do have to do this. I'm not rolling over and letting you play dead. Anyway, you think that'd be the end of it? They'd find a way to get me. Maldonado practically said it. They could have me shot down just as easily as flip the switch on you. Fuck that. We're out of here. Now finish your noodles and get into the car."
********
Dorian ducked into the car and gave Kennex a look. "So. Here we go. Any last words?"
Kennex sighed. "This could be the start of--"
"I know, I know, 'of a beautiful friendship.' Sweet of you, man," grinned Dorian.
"I was GOING to say, 'of the biggest mistake of my life.'"
Dorian leveled a stare. "John. Not the biggest. How about that time you and Detective Stahl--"
Kennex raised a finger. "Not another word. Leave it, I mean it. God, I hope you don't keep bringing that up all the way to the coast."
"Not if you let me drive."
"Not a chance."
"Well this is looking to be the worst trip I've ever been on."
"You can count on it, my man. You can count on it," Kennex rubbed his leg, as he pulled into traffic, and followed the lights, heading west.
