Then why don't they just do a Heracles film? That's pretty much him going around fighting stuff and sexing up women without having to make major changes!
I don't get it either. Maybe they think the movies'll sell better to the general public that way? The knowledge the general public has about myths is probably not that deep (mine isn't either :D), so the chance that these changes will bother lots and lots of people are pretty low. Still, most myths are action-packed enough in themselves, and you'd think choosing one of the many versions would be less work than inventing your own one, right?
You'd think so. I mean, this is Theseus they're using as a protagonist here: he went for a walk to Athens and killed monsters along the way, then did the whole thing in Crete with Minos and the Minotaur. Isn't that plenty of adventure?
