Paw Pad healing - time or do something?

We have taken in a stray who showed up one day and took our Welcome Mat quite literally. I have no idea how long he had been outside, but he's been in our house for about 3 weeks now. He's been vaccinated and neutered and is adjusting well, but the pads on his paws are still looking very cracked and rough ( Read more... )

I found a stray outside with cracked/injured paw pads and they healed just fine over time. They are nice and soft now from walking on carpet instead of cement, lol. I didn't do anything to treat them, he was checked out by the vet by the rescue who helped care for him and they didn't say to do anything about it. I would say they are fine unless you notice some kind of infection or something. The cracked stuff disappeared in maybe.. a month or two or something like that? They seemed "healed" pretty quickly, but it might take a little bit for them to look completely pink or not cracked, if that makes sense.

It makes perfect sense. I just want him to be perfect RIGHT NOW, ya know? ;)
Tonight we might allow him to interact directly with one of our other cats. Very exciting and nervous about the whole thing =^..^=

Haha, what a cute face!!

And yes, I definitely understand, I felt the same way but I was just happy that he was free of any serious illnesses and healthy overall. I doubt you will have any issues with his paws :)

Good luck with the introduction! My stray was/is totally insane, lol. My other two cats hate other cats and tolerate each other, so it was an interesting time introducing him to them. He is still a pain in my butt cause he chases my timid cat like crazy, but no one ever gets injured or anything and it works out for the most part, hehe. If you have trouble, try buying some feliway plugins. They are expensive but might help calm them down if they are having issues.

There's a Feliway plugged in in the hallway outside his room. It (and time) has gotten Mietze, our tuxedo girl, to stop growling, though she still hisses. However, we've caught her "lounging" in the hallway near the door, so we consider that a great sign.

It's gotten Tommy (the orange boy) to hiss less often, though it still happens from time to time. Tommy also seems to want to come in to Oreo's room (yes, the all black boy is being called Oreo - not the tuxedo. My husband chose the name, and he thinks its hilarious!) I have great confidence that after some smack-downs, Tommy and Oreo will be friends who play with each-other.

Mietze... well, Tommy's been with us for almost 3 years, and she's still not quite sure about him sometimes ;)

You could try putting Vaseline on them...if he licks it, it won't hurt him.

I've thought about that, but I also figure he's been through so much, I don't want to overdo if I don't need to.

You could try getting some Mushers Secret and using it on his paw pads.
