Constipation?

My cat's behavior is completely normal.  Litter box habits are the same.  Appetite is the same.  Is playful (in fact he's playing with a toy right now as I type).

He's just been throwing up about once a day. The vomit has both had hairballs in it and not.  But it never has undigested food

His stool is hard but he's going regularly.  I have been ( Read more... )

Hm well my roommate had a similar issue where her cat was normal except for vomiting, and he was indeed constipated. If it isn't stopping though, you should probably go to the vet and get something else.

If he was constipated he would not be able to go at all. Throwing up with constipation is usually a sign of straining too hard and making themselves nauseous. So if the vomit is not near the litterbox then thats another sign that it may not be constipation.

Chances are based on what you said it's hairballs which the laxatone will help with. It will also help with the stools. For sure if it does not resolve with 4-5 more days of laxatone call the vet. And know that you can give the laxatone twice a day if your cat likes it, mine don't I have to smear it in their mouths to get them to take it ;)

great advice. Thanks so much. I think i'll up his dosage. I've been giving the one teaspoon once a day but he's a BIG cat. Not overweight. Just big. 17lbs.

Thanks for your input :)

that's really interesting. since you already know a lot about this, can you recommend any specific brands? The tricky part is my cat got a really bad case of crystals 5 years ago and needs to eat food for urinary tract health as well.

My cat has constipation issues, and when he throws up because of straining, it's always within a few feet of the litter box and is usually completely digested, with or without hair in it. (In contrast, when either cat throws up from eating too fast, it's always undigested and near the food dish, if not in it.) He'll also spend a lot of time near the box when he's having problems - normally he only goes downstairs to use it and then comes back up again, but if he's constipated he'll hang out and sleep down there, like he wants to be close by in case he's able to go. He actually did this all day yesterday, so I gave him a little extra lactulose hoping to head off a major problem; sure enough, he pooped during the night and this morning he was upstairs again.

i spent $30 on his ailing body today so hopefully it helps him :) thanks for the comment.

I can't help with the constipation issue any more than others have but I hear you on the heaving and walking around. Before my cat was diagnosed with IBS this was a daily occurrence of me trying to follow him around holding out disposable plates for him to vomit on ...I'd hear it coming then get him to the tiles but nope...backwards and backwards until finally carpet.,..now I'm good to let it out :( I can laugh about it now but those few months...urgh!
