One more thing

My stepdad recently bought a GPS. It's a Magellan Maestro 3100. He showed me how it works a few weeks ago, and it was kind of fun tricking it if we didn't go the exact route it suggested. It readjusts itself for current location if you do that. He said I can take it with me on the trip to Gulfport this weekend. My dad doesn't need it for directions ( Read more... )

I owe you a better reply than I have time to write at the moment since I'm leaving later this afternoon with my dad on the trip to Gulfport. I just don't really have time to say much at the moment. I'll reply later with more comments about the GPS though.

I'm finally getting back to you about the GPS. Call me queen of procrastination. My stepdad originally bought this one after a business trip to Dallas/Fort Worth. The car rental place in Dallas offered a GPS with the car for $9 extra, and he said it was a huge help in getting around the big city area where he would have gotten lost otherwise. I think so far, I really like the Magellan GPS. It worked well for the most part. My dad and I borrowed it from my stepdad and used it on the trip down to Gulfport the weekend of the 10th through 12th. My dad knows the way down there and around the main areas of Gulfport/Biloxi really well so he didn't think he would need it when I first told him I was bringing it on the trip. It didn't take long before my dad was totally sold on the idea, and now he plans to buy one of his own ( ... )

Very cool. Sounds like you've got yourself a pretty good one.

You mentioned geocaching -- my Garmin StreetPilot c330 isn't really suited for that either, as there's no display or means of entering coordinates or determining the accuracy of the satellites (a major complaint of mine -- I want to know what satellites are visible, and which are being tracked). Even the simplest Garmin eTrex has those capabilities, and is much more suited to geocaching.

I just wish my eTrex had a WAAS or DGPS receiver as well as the normal GPS receiver (though mine is rather old; I'd imagine modern ones would be able to receive those signals) to increase accuracy when caching.
