Invisible fence

Invisible fences: absolutely horrible, magical perfection, or somewhere in between? Would you use one? Would you judge someone else who did?

Irresponsible. Recently a former classmate kept posting on facebook how her intact male dog kept taking off and visiting the female neighbor dogs through the invisible fence. I told her to get a real fence and fix her damn dog.

Cruel and ineffective. If a dog runs off they'll be unwilling to return home because of the shock they'll get from going back into the yard. There are neighbors down the street from my parents with one, and every morning the dog runs through it and then is too scared to come back.

Awful. I silently judge and depending on the person, try to see if I could sway them toward a real fence or some additional training.

If it works? Magical, and only slightly horrible, perfection. If it doesn't work (animal doesn't pay attention, or animal runs out of range but then is too scared to go home), absolutely horrible.

I would judge if the owners(s) had evidence the system wasn't working but didn't change to an effective one like... y'know... a real fence or some training or something.

I hate them.

I have no idea who has an electric fence and who doesn't--I live in a rather large town and we walk different routes all over. Therefore, if I pass by a person's yard and three dogs come running towards us, barking, with no obvious physical barrier, I freak the fuck out, as does Zoey. And understandably so, I think.

Also, someone else already mentioned that invisible fences don't keep other animals out.

And I think the shock is unnecessary and psychologically confusing, particularly because it gives the dog a bad association with the boundaries of his/her property, which could be problematic if it should get loose and then try to run home.

Just... problems all around. Buy a real damn fence.
