A dog gets out of its yard and, while it's free, it attacks and maims a human being. Does the dog's owner bear more responsibility if s/he trained the dog to be aggressive versus simply not properly training and socializing the dog?

I think both of those cases are equally bad, because pretty much any dog has the potential for biting somebody. Regardless of training or non-training, the damage is done, and it was the owner's responsibility to make every effort to contain the dog.

Edited for stupid typo, and to say: I've made a lot of effort to make sure my dogs don't have the chance to get out and damage any people, property, or pets. With our family liking big dogs so much, we would so not want to lose our dog because of our own negligence.
