THANK YOU for writing this. I started off intrigued, then my smile just got bigger as I kept reading because this is such a fantastic explanation for the bizarre character shifts we've seen this series, and at the same time it doesn't just ignore things - Arthur really does feel something for Gwen, he DID treat Merlin badly (and he knows it).
I was frustrated by the first half of Series 2 mainly because Arthur's personality seemed to have been redefined as "whatever the plot required," rather than continuing the complexities of Series 1. This bothered me enough that I decided to examine how Series 1 Arthur would react to the events of Series 2 and this fic was the result.
Oh, that was excellent. This makes me slightly less peeved about prat!Arthur in series 2, though he seems to be returning to normal in recent episodes. Brilliant story. I'm mem'ing this. (: ♥
Thank you. I feel as well that the Series 1 M/A dynamic has been restored to its former depths in the past two episodes (2x08 and 2x09.) It actually makes the ending feel a bit prescient weirdly.
I was sure I commented the last time I read this, but unless you have posted this elsewhere then I guess I didn't, sorry :s
With shoddy cleaning, deplorable footwork, and courageous poison-drinking (and how had Arthur ever forgotten that?) all at his disposal, I love this last sentence, it made me laugh out loud, and I love the way the rest of the fic unfolds. It makes good sense of a lot of oddities in season 2, and deals with the aftermath of the questing beast very nicely, good job.
Set your mind at ease, sweetheart: you did comment over at merlin_flashfic, but thank you for taking the time to comment again! Your words were the one bright spot in an otherwise miserable start-of-the-week Monday.

Also, "sneaky-clever" might just be the best compliment ever.

I found this a very interesting potential take on Arthur's reversion in S2, and I liked the mirrored behavior you brought to our attention. :)
