I set off the draft of my second chapter to my university co-authors, in what (I hope) is a more or less complete form. I'm sure there will be some major revisions since one of the senior co-authors tends to throw curve balls, but for the moment I have a chance to catch my breath in this mad dash to the finish line. Connections can definitely be as simple as that. I'd throw in that actively participating in research (by presenting, having a poster, asking good questions at talks) also helps to make connections, and also actually going to the conferences to meet these people (which may be a prerequisite for the other things).

Definitely true! It's pretty easy for me compared to some fields since I only have one maybe two conferences which are really relevant to me.
