Desktop is officially br0k3n I do believe. Specifically when I tried to open "My Computer" I had to force quit my way out of the window and the whole menu interface died. The three finger salute had no effect and I had to yank the power. The machine has been having issues in the past with the USB ports failing in progressively shorter and shorter ( Read more... )

If I was in this situation and had the money (or more accurately, "when I was etcetera"), I would totally take the excuse to say "Oh dear me! Computer's dead. Nothing I can do but build myself a fancier one!"

I'm probably going to loose my geek privileges for this but really we don't need a 'better' machine. Hell we probably don't even need a desktop when you get right down to it. We don't game and do only basic photo-editing (I <3 GIMP & Pisca). I used to use it for coding but the laptop is powerful enough for that right now. The only thing we used to the old computer for was to do taxes and as a spare for the occasional time we both needed to be online.

There is a chance in hell that I may someday decided to set up a computing cluster but really that's more an excuse to save the old broken computers then anything else.

Thanks for commenting :) Composing this reply made me realize that I probably don't need to replace the desktop. I just need to get some USB splitters so I can plug the printer and such into a laptop when the time comes.

I think that sounds like a wise plan then! I do professional design work on my home computer, so I'm always in need of faster and better things, but if you don't need anything fancier than you've got, I would definitely say it wasn't worth the money to buy all-new toys if it's avoidable. :)

I glanced at this recently, and while I was looking at higher end gaming computers, my impression was that overall computer prices have gone down significantly and the last couple years. So if you're going to by a new computer, now probably is a fairly good time.

*nods* That was my impression as well. I think there are quite a few systems out there for under $400 that would meet our needs well. That being said I think we may be able to get away with just a new netbook (which we were going to get anyway), USB splitter and an external DVD/CD RW drive.

That sounds like a very sensible plan. I'm not sorry that I've said goodby to my personal desktop machines.

I'm sorry something like this was the driver for it.
