..... when there is an Imperial Stormtrooper at the urinal to my left and Boba Fett at the urinal to my right!
Supanova was very crowded today and queues were long for everything but it seemed to be well organised, with many more helpers on hand just about everywhere I turned. Things moved faster and smoother than they did in 2008, the last time I went.
I got in the signature lines early this time and amused myself for next hour or so. I asked Charisma Carpenter, Mark Lutz and Summer Glau to sign my
Waiting in the Wings script comic book. Their reactions were amusingly different - Mark immediately remembered the famous ".... Groo?" line, Charisma was immensely unimpressed by the artwork on the title page showing Cordy and Angel kissing, commenting that it barely looked like her and Summer said she really enjoyed doing that episode. All three though it was a cool idea to get them to sign the only episode that all three of them were in together. None of the three had ever seen the script books and spent a few moments looking through them. Mark, in particular, spent some time looking through it and read a couple of the lines (none of his own!) until his PA nudged him to move on to the next person. I was happy!
I also asked Summer to sign my
Serenity: Those Left Behind HC, the same one Jewel Staite signed in 2008. I asked her to write "Stay Shiny" just as Jewel had done. I apologized for the lack of originality but I explained that I had been so dumbfounded when I (tried) to speak to Jewel that I just gummed meaningless syllables so it had been Jewel's choice. Summer smiled and said "That sounds just like her -" and then her face fell "- ooops, but don't tell her I said that!" and then she smiled a smile so radiant I think I was dazzled. I was very happy.
The last person I asked to sign was Ekiza Dushku and I had the
BtVS S8 No Future for You TPB for her to sign. I asked her to write "Faith Hope and Trick" but she didn't get where that came from. I explained and, much to her embarrassment, she said that she forgotten much of those early episodes, given that it was more than a decade ago for her. She did say that she was an occasional reader of the BtVS S8 series and that she loved the Chen cover for #6 (the one with the spray can and graffiti). Eliza also said that she had two new projects "in the works" which she couldn't talk about just yet because nothing was finalised but she said that they were well worth waiting for. Sounded interesting to me.
I have to say that all three of the women seemed to be so fine and delicate - Charisma in particular seemed so small. I don't know why but I had imagined to her be a lot taller and bigger than she was.
Eliza amused lots of people in the queue because there was a guy with an amazing Ghostbusters outfit including an enormous back pack, complete with flashing lights, flickering dials and moving parts. Eliza wanted to see what the pack felt like so she took off her jacket and scarf (it was cold in the Pavillion today) and pulled the pack on. We were all waiting for her to struggle but she hefted its considerable weight easily - she may look delicate but there's plenty of power in there!
I didn't buy very much, given that I spent a fair bit on signatures but I did pick and choose my purchases carefully. There were some real bargains to be had so I wandered from stall to stall, comparing prices. In the end I settled on:
