Summary: This is what happens when you mix a boy who's head over heels with his best friend and alcohol.
"Are you coming or not, moron?" The question was whispered so close to his ear that he felt the lips brush his skin. Shiver. The younger boy pushed a shot glass full of tequila in one of the older boy's hand and grabbed the other, tugging him along with a big, bright smile.
What was happening? Were his senses really that twisted by alcohol? Was he imagining the connotations to every sentence and touch that his best friend was throwing his way? It definitely had to be the alcohol. There was no other explanation. He felt like he was going crazy.
So what was left to be done? Only one thing.
Well, to hell with it. Jonghyun threw back the shot and swallowed quickly, feeling the drink burn his throat and followed Kibum through the hallway, squeezing between everyone and getting farther from the origin of the music that was bump-bump-bumping throughout the house party and into the backyard. They both stumbled a bit as they walked - effect of the alcohol, no doubt. Kibum was giggling like no other and Jonghyun was smiling with him.
Passed the beer pong tables, passed the couples gyrating their hips together, passed the people who've lost consciousness on the couches and out the door they went. Kibum laced his fingers with Jonghyun's. Jonghyun pretended that his heart raced and his face flushed even deeper because of the alcohol. It was definitely because of that last shot. That would be his excuse for everything tonight. Wasn't there a song about blaming it on the alcohol or something?
"Oh silly, silly boy Jonghyun." Kibum giggled and took a sip of the concoction in the cup he was holding. "You just don't know, do you?" He was walking out towards the bench on the farthest side of the backyard.
Know? Jonghyun didn't know something? What was it that he did not know? It was definitely the alcohol. "Wait, what? Talk slower, Kibum, I'm not exactly fully there right now, you know?"
Kibum snorted. "But you're never fully there, Jjongie." Another sip.
"Hey! I resent that! And I'll have a better argument...later. Here, I'll forgive you if you give me a sip." Jonghyun reached for the cup with his free hand. Kibum brought the cup up above their heads and leaned in toward Jonghyun a bit more.
"I've got a better idea," the diva said with a smirk. The alcohol.
"Key, what are you doing?" Their breath was mingling. They were too close and as much as Jonghyun wanted to kiss him right there, he was not drunk enough to lose all inhibition. His heart was beating so hard, he was sure that it was going to leap out any second. Again, he blamed it on the alcohol.
Wait, let's rewind to earlier in the day.
"Kim Jonghyun!" The voice he had grown so accustomed to called out to him on his way from the cafeteria to his dorm building.
He slowed down his pace and without turning around called back, "Yeah, Key?" The nickname they made up for him.
A boy with dyed blonde hair caught up with the brunette and they walked at the same pace. "So, you know how we're moving out tomorrow? Well Luna told Victoria who told me that Onew was told by Minho that one of the frats are having a really big party tonight. It's an open party and they'll have beer, vodka, Jose Cuervo, Malibu, the works. We have to go! Even Taemin and Amber are coming up." Key linked their arms together as they walked. It was one of the many ways which showed just how comfortable they were with each other. They really were the best of friends.
They had met on move-in day. Kibum had just set everything up on his side of the room and was walking to the bathroom to wash his hands. I guess my roommate's alright. This Jinki kid seems like a total klutz though. And how does a guy with the name Jinki end up with a nickname like Onew? I mean, it doesn't even make sense. But, whatever, at least -
His thoughts were interrupted when he was bumped into by some kind of short person carrying a big box.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Please forgive me." The short male bowed his head but walked off to put the box down in his room, Kibum could only assume. He snorted, rolled his eyes, and continued to the bathroom. He washed his hands and walked back to his dorm. He was at his door when curiosity got the best of him and he continued down the hallway. Part of him actually wanted to find that kid. He didn't know why but he didn't question it.
He took a few more steps and looked casually into the room next to his. He smirked and leaned against the doorframe. There were a few boxes piled up on one side of the room while the other was neatly organized and decorated with what looked like soccer team pictures and even a trophy or two. Kibum looked around to the messier side of the room and finally saw a tuff of hair pop up behind one stack of boxes.
He knocked on the door and walked in. The other boy turned to look at him and a huge bright smile immediately found itself on his face. "Hey!" Simple.
"Hey," replied Kibum. "I guess we're neighbors."
"Oh really? That's cool. I'm Jonghyun by the way. And I'm sorry again for bumping into you and running off in the hallway." He reached a hand out toward the other boy.
"I'm Kibum, and it's cool." They shook and Kibum ran a hand through his hair. "I'm to your right. I'm done setting up, do you want some help putting things away?" Strangely nice of Kibum. To this day, he doesn't understand why he didn't just walk back out, but he doesn't regret it. He doesn't let Jonghyun know this though. To this day, Jonghyun doesn't let him forget how he offered his kindness to the kid who bumped into him in the hallway. "Shut up, I just knew you were never going to make friends so I was being generous with my friendship." "Oh, okay Kibum. It had nothing to do with your kind heart, right?" "I don't have a kind heart, idiot." They'd have a laugh and continue on with whatever they were doing.
Even now, walking with Kibum to their building, it blew Jonghyun's mind that they grew so close so fast. It had only been a year but they saw each other daily, ate meals together most of the time, got a few classes together second semester and they stayed up late just talking like a bunch of girls, Jonghyun would add. That wasn't to say that he didn't enjoy spending time with Kibum. It scared him sometimes how much he actually enjoyed spending time with his neighbor. Some nights, he'd stay up and think about Kibum. It made him feel a little creepy. He'd think about how Kibum's eyes would turn into crescents when he laughed, how delicate but strong his hands looked, how he'd hug him almost every night when they said goodbye even though they'd see each other in a few hours anyways, how he'd knock on the wall separating them before he'd fall asleep and Jonghyun would knock back right after. Yeah, he felt creepy thinking about his now best friend with the lights off, staring at the ceiling. Staring at the wall next to his bed seemed even creepier, so he stopped himself from turning towards it.
Some nights, Minho would come back at 2 or 3 from the library or his girlfriend's room or from the gym. Some nights, Key was still there, sitting with Jonghyun on the latter's bed and the two would be studying together, but some nights Key was gone and Jonghyun was sitting up in bed, his lyric notebook or drawing pad in front of him. They'd trade greetings and Jonghyun would have such a frustrated and confused look in his eyes, Minho would know that Jonghyun was dealing with conflicting feelings.
Didn't this happen just last week?
Jonghyun heard the door open and looked up, giving his roommate a slight nod, nibbling at the end of the pencil in his hand frustratingly. "Hey." The only thing illuminating the room was Jonghyun's desk lamp. The clock on Minho's desk read 3:23 AM.
"Hey, why are you still up?" Minho put down his book bag and opened his closet to get his sleeping attire out. Basketball shorts and a muscle shirt.
"Idunno, can't sleep. So I'm drawing." Jonghyun went back to sketching as Minho changed. "Key left like half an hour ago." He offered up this random piece of information to no one in particular and for no real reason. Other than, you know, Key was the only thing his brain could conceive of this moment. Or the last half hour. Or the last few nights, really.
"You know," Minho turned to look at him, toothbrush and toothpaste in hand. "It would be okay."
Jonghyun's head shot up and he looked at Minho for a moment. They were both silent as Jonghyun attempted to decipher exactly what his roommate said.
"Wait." Pause. "What?"
Minho snorted and shook his head, turning to head out to the bathroom. "You two are either too dense or too scared to notice or say anything. The rest of us see it." And with that, he left.
Jonghyun stared at the spot where Minho's head was before it disappeared behind the door. He blinked. Once. Twice. Three times. Then he blushed and bit on the end of his pencil even harder. Was he really that obvious? And was Minho saying that Key... No. Jonghyun shook his head. There's no way. It was all wishful thinking. I mean, Key was very open with his orientation. He was comfortable with it. He was the kind of feminine type of gay. He checked out guys with the girls, he liked going shopping with them and his fashion sense was impeccable. Their group of friends were very open and accepting of Key. The core group consisted of Jonghyun, Kibum, Minho, Onew - Kibum and Onew strangely got along very well as roommates and friends - Luna, Kikwang, Dongwoon, and Victoria. Taemin and Amber were part of the group but they both transferred out to a different university at the beginning of the second semester.
Opposite of Kibum, Jonghyun had been confused about his sexuality but not to the point where it was torturing him. He knew he liked girls but he found himself being fond of guys every once in a while. He never chased the fondness anywhere so he didn't know for sure. With Kibum, it was different. He couldn't get the boy out of his thoughts, out of his mind, out of his dreams, out of his heart. He tried to ignore it, but whenever his best friend touched his hand or traced a line down his arm or cuddled into him, Jonghyun's heart would race and his stomach would do flips. There was no way he could have feelings for his best friend. This is how friendships get ruined. His life wasn't a movie or a tv sitcom or a story or something like that. This was real life and happy endings don't happen in real life. He knew that much. He wasn't going to risk an amazing friendship over feelings that are probably not returned, no matter what Minho says.
"Earth to Jonghyun! Where the hell has your pea-sized brain gone off to?" Kibum had stopped walking and was now standing in front of him, waving his hands in front of his face. "Jjong? Hello! Listen to me, what the fuck."
Jonghyun blinked and brought his eyes to focus on the boy standing in front of him. "Sorry, I was just thinking."
"Yeah, well that's a first. You were in a complete daze. What were you thinking about anyways? You looked so serious." Kibum crossed his arms.
Jonghyun looked at him and how there was a flicker of curiosity hidden in the annoyance in Kibum's eyes. He smiled and shook his head. "Nothing, just whether or not I should go to the party tonight."
Kibum's eyes grew big and he threw his hands in the air, exasperated. "Whether or not you should go, Jonghyun?" He turned so he was walking next to him, arms linked again. They were walking up the stairs to their dorm now. "Whether or not you should go!? You are going. It's the last party of the year and you know it's gonna be good."
Jonghyun took the dorm card out of his back pocket and swiped it through the machine. "Yeah, but I was going to finish packing tonight." The door buzzed and Key opened the door. "I don't want to be rushing tomorrow."
"Okay, how about this." They were walking down the hall. "How about - hey, Dongwoon - I help you finish packing tomorrow? I'm almost done. All that's left is to pack up my bed sheets and a few miscellaneous items." They rounded the hall and went up the stairs. "With me helping, you'll be done in no time." They reached Jonghyun's door and Key walked over to his door, getting his key out. "Come on, Jjong, it'll be fun."
They both turned their doorknobs and Jonghyun looked over at Key and thought for a moment. One last party with the gang, drinking, a few lasting memories, fun, music. Or laundry, folding, packing, organizing, alone.
"Okay, fine. I'll go."
Kibum smiled. "Yes! I'm going to shower and get ready. I'll be over in a bit. Get ready, we're pre-gaming in Victoria and Luna's room at 9." Key disappeared in his room with a last wave and closed the door.
Minho was sitting at his desk, an IM box open on his laptop.
Jonghyun laid down in his bed and sighed loudly.
"What?" Minho looked up for a second and continued typing.
"That party tonight? At whichever frat house? Key persuaded me into going." He put the pillow over his head. And he had so much left to do. Packing was such hell.
"Oh," Minho stopped typing for a moment and stood up and sat next to him on the bed. "Well, look at it this way. You'll have a really really good night, no doubt. Right?" Nod. "But then tomorrow, you'll be packing with a hangover." He laughed and ran over to his desk before Jonghyun could hit him with his pillow.
"Minho! You are no help!"
--
The rest of the night consisted of Jonghyun taking a nap, waking up at 8pm and realized he had to get ready. A long shower, a quick change, 45 minutes later and he was ready. 5 minutes later and Kibum was knocking on his door. A 5 minute walk to Victoria and Luna's dorm and the drinking games commenced.
Liquor before beer, you're in the clear. Beer before liquor, you'll get sicker.
They didn't drink much. They didn't have much. They did have enough for everyone to be at least a bit buzzed. 6 shots for Jonghyun, Key and Minho, 5 shots for everyone else. They all wobbly, giddily walked through the neighboring college community - where all the fraternity and sorority houses were placed - and found the frat house they were looking for. Rania's "Dr. Feel Good" could be heard down the block. Key immediately started dancing along as they walked into the house. Jonghyun had to admire how he could dance to girl groups better than the girls themselves. His hip thrusts, the way his hand traveled down his own body. It was, for lack of better words, one of the hottest things Jonghyun had ever seen. Jonghyun had to shake his head and think about other things - puppies, kitties, where he could find some alcohol - but really, he was a guy, who could blame him?
The rest of the night was kind of a blur. Dancing, drinking, chugging, laughing, tripping. The group got there and they each had two more shots, one of Jose Cuervo and another of Malibu. After that, they filled up their cups with soda and their choice of liquor. Jonghyun started to lace his fingers with Key's and wrap his arm around the other's waist. Kibum let his fingers linger everywhere longer than he should. Or so Jonghyun thought. He was blaming it all on the alcohol. How jealous he got when a girl or a guy shot connotative gazes towards Key, how outrageously good Key looked under the dim, colorful lights of the house, how badly he wanted to tell Kibum what he felt. It was all the alcohol's fault. All of it.
Kibum had told the others that he wanted some fresh air. Jonghyun said he'd go along. Kibum said he was going to get a bit more to drink. Jonghyun said he'd wait and Kibum gave his hand a little squeeze before he left and wedged his way through the crowd. Jonghyun stood there in a daze before a hand slapped his back.
"Jonghyun, just go for it." He turned to see Onew with his arm around Luna's waist. "He's too scared and he's waiting for you." Onew looked passed Jonghyun, looked back at him, smiled and winked. He turned around and gave Luna a kiss on the cheek and at the same time, he felt a more delicate but firm hand grab his shoulder. He flipped around again and Key had his cup fiilled in one hand and a shot glass in the other which was soon shoved into Jonghyun's hand.
"Are you coming or not, moron?"
That led them to where they are now, with Kibum holding the cup above his head and his face being inches away from Jonghyun. Jonghyun felt as though his poor heart was going to give up any second because it was beating too fast. Way too fast for it to be healthy. Or normal. This is what happens when you mix a boy who's head over heels with his best friend and alcohol.
"Key," he tried again. "Can I just..." He lost his train of thought. What exactly did he want to do? Their eyes locked and his face flushed and he really didn't want to do anything but kiss him. Key was just acting like this because there was alcohol in his system. Right? It's not like they've never not been close like this before. It's just never been this deliberate or for this long. Key smirked and Jonghyun watched his mouth curve up. He just lost it.
Jonghyun pressed his mouth against Key's. Despite how much he'd been waiting for this, despite the alcohol and how good his lips felt, it was a gentle kiss. It was gentle and sweet and his heart was racing and his head was swimming and he felt fuzzy all over. Key wrapped his arms around Jonghyun's neck, making sure that the cup was still held correctly. Jonghyun had both hands on either side of his best friend's face as he depended the kiss. Their lips fit together perfectly. But then again, the alcohol was taking over Jonghyun's system and he thought that time had stopped and the music, the party, the people were gone and it was just Kibum and himself.
Kibum broke the kiss and rested his forehead on Jonghyun's, catching his breath. A small smile formed on both of their lips and Key brought the cup up into Jonghyun's hand. The older boy took a gulp of the drink. It was sweet, but he could still taste the alcohol. Malibu and pepsi, maybe. He gave Kibum the cup and pecked his lips again.
"I told you this party was gonna be good."
And maybe it wasn't just the alcohol.
