Cities close by are Gelsenkirchen, Dortmund, Essen (quite lovely considering that you're visiting the most industrialized part of Germany) and Duisburg (has a fantastic zoo)! As a born Colognian I'd like to recommend Cologne as well but it is not really that close by. But if you go there have a look at the lovely district of Rhineland-Palatinate with its lovely rhine-valley, castles and vineyards (thanks the Romans for this).
We are going to visit Cologne for sure. And thank you for the wonderful suggestions!! Sounds like we will spend one full day in Cologne, so I will make sure to see the castles and vineyards there << my main interests anyways *gg*
