A storm of drama for today--my dad's Facebook page was apparently copied by someone during the past 24 hours, and they tried to dupe his friends into "friending" the new page and giving over their private information.  Despite my efforts to curtail it, I'd say about 1/3 of his friends fell for it and friended the fake page before we were able to ( Read more... )

What personal info would a success dupe FB page get?

It's astounding the amount of personal background information people will put on their Facebook accounts, simply because FB asks you to do it. A crook can get access to a person's private email, phone number, current city they live in, place of birth, names of family members--and by getting that info, they can then make fake pages of *those* people, dupe their friends into liking them, and get those people's info. And on and on. Then they either try to steal identities, or if nobody figures out the page is fake then suddenly they post something like "Help, I'm in Italy and all of my credit cards and travelers checks have been stolen--please wire me some money to this account I'm listing ASAP!" People think they're helping their friend and don't bother to double check it beforehand.
