I'd like your feedback on some schtuff as I continue making icons, etc. Because feedback helps me improve, and improvement is pretty awesome. I've been playing around with using more textures and stuff in my icons, and I want to know what you think.

some icons i've made in the past few days )

SKINSSSSSSSSS!

Also, super duper congrats, bb!

But I am a huge fan of your old style. And what you have as examples can work SOMETIMES, but I don't know if it works spectacularly well for the images you've selected? Like, it works well for the first one and kind of the third one, but the second one just looks ... dirty, as if someone ran over it with a sand-truck or whatever. The fourth one is nice too, but I think that the contrast is too high, or something like that. And maybe if the texture in the fourth was flipped vertically and put to fill the empty space? I dunno, I much prefer not using textures and what have you, but I'm sure they can be very nice or whatever.

Just remember to change your style to match the image at hand. What works for one may not work for the other, you know?

And damn, that's one long comment. Anything to get away from fucking Spanish, eh?

Haha. You're actually sort of right about the sand truck comment. LAWL.

The only problem that I have with my old style is that it feels like it's all really similar. Like, for Gilmore Girls, I almost always use the same coloring. When I color icons from a certain show or movie, I usually use very similar colorings for all of the icons from that show/movie in that batch. Like The Notebook icons I just posted? Basically identical coloring for each of them. And I almost never use textures or text. So I feel like I'm sort of... relying on my cropping to make or break the icon. And I don't really know if I'm good enough at cropping to do that, you know ( ... )

You sound so surprised. xD

Yeah, I get that feeling sometimes. But it ultimately depends on your preference. Don't make super tricked out icons that you know you wouldn't want to use, you know? If you like the icon, chances are someone else will too, and chances are you're better at making icons like that than icons that you don't like. And that sentence didn't really work, but you know what I mean. I assume.

Yeah, I get your point there, bb. When I read that section, I automatically thought of boxed (gorgeous icons, by the by). Her icons are, as previously mentioned, absolutely gorgeous, but she only posts like ten at a time every month or something like that. But each of them is completely unique and what have you.

In my opinion, as long as they aren't exactly. the. same., you're all good. Don't try to fit yourself into a style that you don't like.

OMG, I KNOW. ANYTHING TO NOT WRITE FOR EURO OR DO CHEM OR READ ENGLISH (all in like 15 minutes before Greek), PLEASE GOD.

Well I didn't really think about it at first, but you do have a point. And luckily I've still got the file open in Photoshop, so I took out that layer, and it looks a lot better. Although it feels sort of blank now. Hmm. IDK, MY BFF JILL?!

Yeah, I know what you mean. I dunno. I like my old style, but I get bored with it sometimes (increasingly frequently, to be honest). SO I SHALL COMPROMISE! (And not like the Three-Fifths Compromise, where the slaves got the sucky end of the deal. EVERYONE WILL BE HAPPY. YAY!)

OH RIGHT. GREEK TONIGHT. AND WE DON'T HAVE TIVO INFORMATION. SHIT MONKEYS.
