IRC stuff

Just wanted to see if anybody had an opinion on this. I frequent the most evil of chat systems, IRC, but that's not what I need to clear up.

Someone on there has this quit:

(Quit: Soldiers fight to stay alive. They fight to keep their friends (their fellow soldiers) alive. When they sacrifice their life, it is to save the life of a friend. R.I.P ( Read more... )

Agreed.
War is a stupid waste of life. Good for technology advances, however. But the thing is - the "war" in iraq isn't even a war. More like a bungled police keeping action.
Fighting Guerillas using conventional methods has never worked, nor will it ever in the future.

Yeah, and even Afghanistan is going back towards Sharia law.

Good thing is that the US is too broke at the moment to start another war :P

People join the Army/Army Reserves for their own reasons.
If you choose to do so and you die in combat that's sad - but something that comes with the job.
It's certainly not because your selfless and saving others - sorry I don't buy that.
I don't support any wars and never think it's the answer and don't have much regard for anyone in the forces.
I think Forest Gump summed up the armed forces quite nicely - If you're stupid and do what your told without questioning anything then you'll be a "genius".

Yeah, Janet commented to me the armed forces are cliquey like any large workplace. But unlike most large workplaces, people from the armed forces generally only hang out with their own. Bit like coppers, but much more so.

It's always strange to see a lone soldier in camo fatigues strolling through a shopping centre, it's so surreal it's hard not to stare, or giggle, or both. Must be a bit strange for them too.

I used to know a really good bloke who came back after a years service a total tossbag. That's only a sample of one, but I could see the army turned him into a testosterone charged know-it-all from a fairly reasonable person.
