game information
Somarium has undergone many changes, both from before the current residents arrived and after. There are still many mysteries regarding this unknown world, but here is some more in depth information regarding Somarium.
For some more detailed, play-by-play information about everything that's happened, refer to the
event timeline. Parts of this entry will be updated every so often to reflect in-game knowledge.
❦ somarium: the game
One day you wake up to find yourself in a completely foreign environment. If anything, it's definitely not your bed. Sadly you were not kidnapped for experimentation, nor did you have some freak heart attack, die, and are now in heaven. Welcome to the world of Somarium, a dream world of sorts.
The main premise of the game is you find yourself trapped in a world that is unlike you've ever seen. You find on your person a strange phone-like communication device: the Dreamberry. However, this is not just your standard Blackberry ripoff cellphone. It records dreams and can be viewable to anyone who just happens to be looking through their inbox and watches it.
And no, you can't just wake up out of this place. There's a reason why it says "trapped". But perhaps this could be changed?
So why are you here? Random chance? Dumb badluck? Or is there an actual reason for it? The world is mysterious in more ways than one, and the closer people come to the truth, the more dangerous it becomes.
However, as time goes by, most fall into just living in the world. Meeting new people, starting up new hobbies, form relationships. Even without the events revolving around the world, the relationships and conflicts that arise between the people provide ample sources for activity. Some even ignore what's going on and just go on about their lives.
But that might not last for long. As time went on, a plot has been uncovered. In fact, it looks like another war is on the horizon, though no one realizes it. Who or what will be the cause and when it will happen has yet to be determined. But if things continue on, history may repeat itself. The phases of the moon seem to hold hints to what is to come. As the full moon shines downward, prosperity reigns over Somarium. But as it changes to the blackness of the new moon, the environment becomes more dangerous, as if some evil power is leaking through it.
And now, you discover not only can you watch the dreams of others, but you can actually walk into them. You can even create your own dream environments. Apparently this has something to do with the fact that you're actually not in your real body but some kind of dream manifestation called a Dreamwalker. The heck? Whatever that means, it seems like those stuck in this place can do a lot more than they initially thought.
Someone else is aware of this as well, and it looks like she's about to make her move.
Just as there is both light and dark, where there are dreams, there are nightmares.
So how one is 'involved' with the game is up to you. You can join in on trying to uncover the missing clues, have fun with your own little "dream world" creation, or just kick back and have some character-based fun. There are plenty of places you can explore, and with little to no effort, all the monsters you could want to kill just outside the barrier in the desert.
You've entered through the dream. How will you face this new reality?
❦ somarium: the plot
Will be updated every so often.
It seems that the world is more than one is led to believe. While the majority of the time is spent just making a living in this strange world, something else is happening as well. There is actually a war on the horizon. Between whom and for what reason, you ask? The details are being revealed through the game, but here is the general information that we can reveal at this point in time.
Somarium was once a prosperous world, that much is known. But over time, the people learned to harness the power of dream energy. It is similar to the concept of mana, or the world's energy. It is this dream energy and everything that is involved that brings the main source of conflict.
A dark force, one that had been sealed for a long period of time, is making a move; one that seems to be a repeat of what happened to Somarium before. No one but the Overlord and those around her know who she is, but that may soon change. The Overlord is still recovering from her own long slumber, as well as having to take care of the recent events, and will need the help of those who managed to arrive into Somarium.
As of August 28, 2010
For many months, no one had heard from the Overlord or any of her court, and rumors began to spread of her disappearance.
Then, the peace was broken.
Through some unknown power, the floating castle that once soared high above in the skies crashed just outside of the protective barrier and landed in the desert. There it rested for about a week before a strange shadow engulfed it and dragged it beneath the sands, creating a giant sink hole. A seal was formed, preventing any who tried to go through, and a strange, giant
statue erected itself above the hole, an inscription giving a possible clue to where answers may lie.
But what is on the other side of the hole? How and why did this all happen? What happened to the Overlord and the others who used to live in that castle?
Just wait. Who knows? Maybe eventually you'll find yourself on the other side. Only time will tell how this story will go.
❦ somarium: the world
Somarium is known as a dream world, but do not let the name fool you. It is in fact a whole other world entirely. It is not a world created by one's dream, or a world that one can simply enter and leave through dreaming. While it is certainly true that one can enter through their dreams, it is not the only way. Those who can travel worlds, on the verge of death, or even unconscious can find themselves 'waking up' into Somarium.
What makes Somarium a dream world is not because people can watch other people's dreams through the Dreamberry, but because of the dreams themselves. All dreams give off some kind of dream energy, and it helps support the world. It does not alter or take form of the person's dream as it is still its own world. But the dreams are like the mana for the world, and help give it life.
Signs of a previous and modern civilization were found before the first new residents arrived into Somarium. Though all the buildings had been mostly intact, they looked as if they had been abandoned for ages. What happened?
❦ somarium: the past
Not much is actually known about Somarium's history. The only ones who could shed light upon this mystery are the ghosts that reside in the floating castle above, and even they do not offer information easily. From the technology and the buildings in the city of Somni, it is obvious that the people who lived before were like those found in modern 20th-21st century civilizations.
From the hints and glimpses of the past given so far, it is known that some horrific battle occurred here before. Strange, deadly, shadowy black creatures called Noctaere had existed before and still lurk somewhere now. What were these monsters? Were they the reason why the world had been abandoned?
If so, where did they come from and why were these ghosts still here? Where did the ghosts even come from? These and many other questions are still left unanswered.
❦ somarium: present day
Since the arrival of its new inhabitants, Somarium has undergone many trials and changes. But it has now returned to its former glory, perhaps even better. What was once old and fading has been renovated to be like new. It was also revealed that the barrier that surrounded the city to protect it from the desert creatures had been farther out than it had been before.
It is starting to look like a new, functioning world again. New people have shown up as well. First arriving as ghostly beings, they had slowly solidified to become and behave like normal human beings. Who are these people? They seem to act as if they were in Somarium all their lives. Could they perhaps be remnants of the past now returning?
As some questions are answered, more questions are spawned. Somarium is still changing, and as more information and the truth about its past and fall are revealed, more dangers will also arise.
Like light and dark, wherever there is a dream, there is a nightmare.
