Hadn't thought of it that way before, but I love the idea and I like your reasoning. Really doubt it'll play out that way on the show (though it would be cool if it did), but if anyone writes this as a fanfic, I'd be all over that. When Castle gets his Mal Reynolds on, it's pretty damn awesome.

Just so you know, this fanfic already exists. It's a WIP I stumbled on last year sometime, but yeah- Castle has a past as an operative if I remember correctly. It's on ff.net.

Yeah I didn't really think it'd be canon. It was more of just an idea to speculate about.

Nope, sorry. Don't buy into that.

He's competent, because he's been doing research for years and because he's, well, Castle. (Severed heads as a way to scare off Alexis' prom date, anyone?)
He can shoot, because he practiced, simple as that. I'm a pretty good shot, too, and I'm not in law enforcement.
He simply has good reflexes and as you yourself pointed out, they're not unfailable.
He jumped and surprised Lockwood, nothing more to it.
Covert by being overt just doesn't work. My friend wanted to join the British intelligence service, but was too tall and blonde - meaning not non-descript.

But as the person before me said, it'd make for a good fanfic plot.

I agree with all of your reasoning other than just being a good shot.
Being a good shot while practicing at the shooting range is a lot different than shooting someone who is standing behind your friend's back in the heat of the moment.
However, I could buy that it was just luck.

Ha! Good point! When I think of Castle and a gun, I always think of the scene in "Home Is Where the Heart Stops" first! I LOVE their season 1 banter!

Ooooooo. I like this reasoning. It would be kind of cool if it came about. I agree with the fanfic angle though. I doubt he was a spy at one time.

I didn't think they'd actually do it in canon, and I don't plan to write it. It's more of just the observation that the idea makes more sense than you'd think.
