The sun striking the trees made the color of the autumn leaves that much more vibrant. Red, orange, gold; all ablaze in the countryside through which two man slowly walked hand-in-hand.
Dorian stopped when the sun came out, a gasp escaping him. He turned, a hand going to his mouth as his eyes took in the amazing colors. Fall had arrived, literally and figurative. Could winter be far off?
“You’re doing it again,” Klaus observed gently from beside him, returning Dorian to reality with a jolt.
“I know.” Dorian gave a bittersweet smile. “I was just thinking. You came to me in the spring, that first time.”
Klaus closed his eyes. At the time, he’d thought that declaring that the Earl had won would be the most difficult thing he’d ever done, only to have his world come to a crashing halt immediately afterward.
“Then…after it all,” Dorian went on quietly, “you came back. It was summer by then.”
“Yes.” Klaus hoped this would be the end of it and took hold of Dorian’s hand again. He smiled when the fingers wrapped around his.
“I spent more than half my life thinking I was someone else.” Dorian turned two sad blue eyes in Klaus’s direction. “I don’t remember the spring, and had my summer taken away.”
Klaus could only nod in agreement. He had learned to just let the Earl talk his way out of his melancholy. In fact, the whole purpose of this trip to New York State had been to give Dorian some peace, allow him to reconcile everything in his head.
At that moment, a cloud passed in front of the sun, extinguishing the colors as if on cue. Dorian lowered his eyes, crunching the dried orange leaves at his feet. “I’m not as young as I used to be. I’m entering my autumn…”
“I’ll glad you didn’t say your fall,” Klaus injected. Especially since I’m older than you are.
Dorian’s eyes flashed up. The tone had been playful, but there was concern in those dark green eyes. “Why do you put up with me, Klaus?”
“Damned if I know,” came the matter of fact reply.
This was enough to bring an amused smile to Dorian’s face. He could not stop himself giving the man a hug. Again, the sun took its cue, peeking out from behind the clouds, igniting the foliage once more.
“I’ll try to stop being so...”
“You?” Klaus injected pointedly.
Dorian could not help smiling at this. “We’re here to find me, remember?” He turned his gaze to the countryside. “What do we do if it takes until my winter?”
Klaus moved closer, slipping an arm around the Earl’s waist. “Stay close, and keep each other warm.”
Dorian gave a bright smile and then rested his head on Klaus's shoulder. He gave a contented sigh when a hand gently stroked his hair. “I think can live with that.”
