Yay! It's about time we had a new challenge over there. I just put it in a news post on the front page of the archive. ^_^

Rowr! I hate fic challenges... because my approach to fic is largely "problem-solving", so anytime someone poses a question or suggestion, I have to do it. ;)

Them's fighting words, babe. :D And seeing as I'm leaving for the glorious homeland of our beloved Major and his Father in less than a week, I shall have plenty of time to cogitate on said challenge during the plane trip.

Muaha. Just gotta pick out the right plotbunny. Then we're having plotbunny stew tonight!

...Okay, darnit, it hit me what I have to do for this. (Rather, Dorian hit me with what he'd have to do if he ever met Papa, and I giggled a whole lot.) Question, though!

Is the senior Eberbach's name and/or rank listed anywhere? We know he was a tank commander, but darned if I can remember if there's anything else stated outright.

No, he is never named in canon. It can be assumed that he has a title, giving that he's descended from the Hapsburgs. But, again, none is given. Fanon has him as Graf, which is equal to a Count or an Earl. I find this amusing, because if it is true, that when Papa dies, that would make the Major equal in aristocratic rank to Dorian.

We have learned in the newer manga that the butler is Conrad Hinkle, but the Major's father remains a question mark. Many have gone with Heinz as his name, but again it's fanon.

There was a short discussion relating to this in the Schloss last year that you might find of interest. http://community.livejournal.com/schlosseberbach/8487.html

Aw, crap. I hate fanon... but on the other hand, I just might hate coming up with justifiable names for canon characters more. So maybe this time it's convenient. ;)

And at least the linked discussion makes it rather plausible. Thanks. ;)

I'm with you there on fanon. There are several things in it that make me crazy, Dorian smelling like roses being chief among them.

Someone, somewhere, decided to name the Major's butler Domenic. Then his actual name was given in book 33. Now every time I see it, I cringe. And then there's the butler calling the Major's father by name rather than "Master," as he does with Klaus. *fingernails on blackboard*
