Sam had lived a normal life since the exile he didn't remember. He had a normal apartment and a normal job.

The idea of anything abnormal happening in his life was one he didn't entertain. He liked his life the way it was: uneventful and, well, normal.

So when a man entered his bakery one morning, he didn't think anything of it. Just another normal customer, he was sure.

"How can I help you?"

The name ripped a shudder from Sam. That was his name. He was sure of it. But if there were really five archangels, and two of them were cast out for refusing to love anyone more than each other, then everything he knew about the Bible was wrong. He'd seen Him as a good, merciful God. But if He'd sentenced them to be forever separated, He couldn't be.

Flashes of the time before humanity came to his mind. Things he'd dreamed of, but dismissed them as just that. Dreams. Images of his brothers. His Father. His lover.

Understanding and recognition lit up his eyes as he looked at the angel beside him.

"Lucifer."

“Samael. My love.”

Lucifer’s grace sang with joy when he saw that understanding flash in his eyes. Even without his grace, Sam could remember. Their punishment was at last completely undone. He was free from the Cage and reunited with his love. They would never be parted again. His smile was joyous, his thumb brushing along Sam’s cheek. “I will never leave you again.”

Beneath his shirt, a small pendant gleamed brightly at their contact, at their reunion.

Sam's hand came up to cover Lucifer's, holding it against his face. There was still a lot he didn't remember, but despite the millennia of mortal lives and separation, he knew he loved this man. Which meant that he was an angel. An archangel. He didn't fully understand what that meant, but if it allowed him to stay with Lucifer, he would accept it.

"I remember you now," he said softly. "But not much else."

Tears threatened his eyes as he drew Sam into his arms. It wasn’t the same as the way their graces had mingled in the past, but it was warmth. Contact. “I will tell you everything, my love. Show you all that we once were before we were cast out.”

He was bound to a mortal form, but every line of him was Samael. The gentleness of his touch, his warmth. Everything that Lucifer loved about him.

“And in time, if you wish, you can reclaim your grace.” It wasn’t a choice he’d force on Sam. If he chose to remain mortal, Lucifer would be with him from life to life. Never leaving his love again.

Sam hugged Lucifer tightly, burying his face in the angel's neck. This was what it felt like to come home. He'd had no idea what he was missing until it was shown to him. Every pain that he'd ever experienced melted away, leaving him with nothing but happiness and an overwhelming sense of love.

"My Grace?" he asked, not understanding. The word made his chest ache, longing for something he didn't fully understand.

Lucifer ran his fingers through Sam’s hair, clutching him close. Something precious he’d been missing for so long. He was complete now. No longer empty and aching, spending centuries in fruitless searching. He’d found Samael. There were no words to fully encompass his relief and joy at finding his lost love again. He dragged in a deep breath, filling his nostrils with the scent of his skin. Everything that was Sam and Samael. Mortal and lost archangel. Returned to him ( ... )

Sam's eyes were drawn to the pendant as Lucifer took it from beneath his shirt. The glowing white light should have hurt his eyes, but all it did was make him want. That was his. He knew he had a lot to learn before he could even understand what it was, but he knew then that he wanted it back.

"When I get my grace back, will I remember everything?" he asked, hopeful. He wanted to remember every moment he spent with Lucifer before they were separated. He wanted to know how what they had done was awful enough to keep two intertwined souls apart. Sam couldn't think of any crime worthy of such a terrible punishment.

His arms pulled back from their place around Lucifer's neck, fingers tracing the outline of his face. This man belonged to him. Just as Sam belonged to Lucifer. He couldn't fully wrap his head around that. He must have done something right in one life or another to earn the angel's love.

The contained grace pulsed, sensing his nearness. The chance to finally return home and become one again. Lucifer smiled, fingers in his hair, gently stroking. “Yes. Everything will be restored to you when your grace returns and you’re made whole again. Immortal.”

Affection bound in a human form was far different than the affection shared between two multidimensional wavelengths -angels not bound to form or space. It was different, but the intensity was not diminished. Every drag of Sam’s fingers along his skin sent shockwaves through his vessel. This was Samael. The lover he’d escaped Hell for.

Lucifer tilted his head towards Sam’s fingers, his eyes warm with affection, his vessel all but glowing with joy - as if it could barely contain the elation singing through his grace. “So much time apart,” he murmured. “No more. Nothing will ever keep me from you again, love. Nothing.”

"We'll have forever, Lucifer. Just you and me," he promised. He'd give up this mortal life in a heartbeat for Lucifer. Nothing he had now could compare to what he would have when his grace was restored to him and he was fully reunited with his love. It was intense now. He couldn't imagine how it would feel when he was an angel again.

Sam shifted closer to Lucifer, hazel eyes meeting his. "Can I kiss you?" He didn't know if angels did that, but he wanted to feel his lover's skin against his own.

Surprisingly, in all of his years since escaping Hell and taking a human form, Lucifer had never been kissed. He wanted no part of taking another lover while he searched for Samael. There was only one he was fated to be with. He would have no other. Mortal, demigod or otherwise. Only Samael.

His vessel’s hand trembled as he inched closer to Sam. To his love. “Please. Please, Sam.”

Lucifer wanted to experience it all, every sort of affection shared between mortal forms. He wanted Sam to touch him, wanted to touch the warm skin of his mortal lover. Samael. His love.

Sam gave him a soft, warm smile before closing the distance between them, kissing Lucifer softly. He felt a strong lurch in his chest, and he knew it had to be his soul rejoicing at being reconnected with his love. He'd never believed in fate, but it seemed obvious to him that he and Lucifer were destined to be together. If this was what a simple kiss felt like, he couldn't imagine how a true connection would feel when he had his grace back.

His fingers threaded into the archangel's hair, pulling him closer as he deepened the kiss. He wasn't sure he could stop touching Lucifer to save his own life.

A kiss always seemed like such tame contact. Humans placed great importance on it, the significance of it and who such touches were given to. Lucifer was sure it could never compare to the threading of grace with another angel. The sense of completion, of intimacy.

Never in all of his vast existence and experiences would he have imagined such a simple touch would be so electric. It sang through his body, sparking along nerve endings, waking up areas of his body he’d never paid much attention to. The force of it hit him like a thunderbolt and he gasped, letting Sam pull him closer and deepen the kiss. Lucifer groaned softly, wrapping his arms around Sam and allowing him to take the lead.

He wanted to learn everything.

Every touch, every thing that would bring his love pleasure like this.

Panting, Lucifer broke the kiss for a moment, nearly overwhelmed at the new sensations. He could only whisper Sam’s name before he was leaning in close again, closing his eyes and trying this kiss again.

Sam could barely breathe, making every moment that much more intense. He'd kissed a few people in his time- he didn't understand before why it never felt right- but it couldn't compare to this. He could tell that if he was supposed to be kissing anyone, it should be Lucifer. No other man had made him feel like a simple kiss truly connected them the way the angel before him did.

The man took full advantage of the broken kiss, getting as much air as he could. He was dizzy from lack of oxygen- something that wouldn't effect an angel the same way it effected him- but he made no complaint when Lucifer leaned in for another kiss. He let the angel take control of this one, letting him learn by instinct what to do.

Muscle memory is a curious thing. His vessel knew what to do, even as he, the angel, was still learning. Taking the lead meant that the first kiss was a little clumsy, but Lucifer was a fast learner. His arms coiled around Sam, fingers tangling in his hair, he bent his head closer to Sam. If a simple kiss was this intense, this perfect a connection, he wanted more.

“Sam,” he panted. “Sam, I want.. want..” Something. He wanted something. Lucifer wasn’t sure what, but there was a definite longing blooming in his chest. His hands wandered down his shoulders, the long lines of his arms. He had to know his new body. Had to learn every line of him. Memorize every inch of his warm, glorious skin.

Sam put some space between them in favor of pulling off his shirt. He was almost positive that angels didn't have sex, but that was almost definitely what Lucifer was asking for. And if Lucifer wanted Sam's body, it was his to take. He didn't know how he looked when he was an archangel, but as a human he'd worked very hard for the body he had, and he was just a little bit proud of it.

"Anything, Lucifer," he promised. "I'll give you anything."
