I wish you'd said that last year. It matches my sort-of-ick experience with the Ditmars. This year I intend to be far more serene. :)

You know it is surprising how many people don't think about things when they nominate. Last year I was devestated that the fan artwork only had one nomination. I queried and the artwork I nominated had one nomination from me! I mean what are people thinking? Fan art work is done for free so we should get in there and nominate our fan art...(I am speaking of course of Conflux posters!).

Also, the cover art for book covers...go through your favourites from this year and nominate the ones you like...heaps of covers this year from Greg Bridges, Shane Parker and Les Petersen...and no I'm not an artist....but I should mention Nick's cover art for Australian Speculative Fiction....

I wasn't here last year! Well, I was, but I had a puny little blog that no one read. And I wasn't brave enough. And I was busy running the Natcon and thus couldn't say anything without it being political...

Eh, I was young and stupid. I wouldn't have listened anyway. :)

I had a dismaying experience last year where a writer who shall remain nameless asked me to nominate a story of his and in return promised to nominate what i thought was my best work. I'm not a prolific writer and there really was only one :-) So I did, only later finding that he had campaigned among a lot of other fans/writers asking them the same thing. There was no proof that he had nominated anyone else's story as promised. Not nice, huh? Even if he did, that was one vote for each story as opposed to however many for his story.

So I won't be responding to any scratch-my-back requests this time around. There's one story I read last year which is still vividly horrific (in a good way!) in my memory and I will be voting for it.

IIRC, you can nominate for the ditmars without being a member of the con, but you have to join the con to vote.

For a bewildering and largely complete list of works eligible for novel and short story awards, check out

Hmm, must put my list of eligible works up on my lj...

benpayne did this last year for novelettes, to bring attention to the format, that was really useful. The Aurealis Awards page has a substantial (though not exhaustive) list that would make a good start.

But... but...

(I s'pose it would help if I'd had something published).

In the interests of avoiding confusion, prodding memories & point out novell*s, I think publication should provide a list of eligible stories too
