Likewise, Thor’s godly buddies ramble around the movie, in a generally supportive way, and near the end, one of them confesses love for him. Surprise, it’s Sif, goddess of war, the only female member of the gang.
Wait, what? When?
Sorry, that wasn't at all the point of this post, but I really enjoyed the fact that Sif didn't get a love interest or any romantic motivation in this film, which ... is weird if in fact she did?
Lots of people missed it - lucky for them! It's a blink or you'll miss it conversation (can't remember who with) where she confesses her love for Thor. DEEPLY IRRITATING because it contributes nothing to the film and pushes her into cliche territory when she was doing so well.
The more I learn about Thor (which I hadn't read when seeing the movie) the more I suspect both love interests were inserted because they happened in the comics and not because they actually worked for this screenplay.
How LOVELY would the movie have been if the women in it were just characters and not romantic? I think my main problem is - a convincing romance takes more than 3 scenes to establish and you rarely get more than this in an action movie because ACTION.
Can we get through a whole Joss Whedon movie without Maria Hill kissing anyone? Or at least, kissing anyone in order to promote THEIR story? Do we need a new variation of the Bechdel Test, to see how many women in action/superhero movies are given functions beyond kissing the hero? This is Joss Whedon and she's obviously the secondary female (because we have Black Widow and Maria's not a super). A better question is "Can we get through a Joss Whedon movie without her kissing a girl
( ... )
