Having explained to Rilian about his new life here and what it entailed, Caspian was eager to introduce his son to his wife, and he walked with him towards the house. Sansa was inside with Eddara, he knew, at the various small tasks that running a household entailed. He was about to explain more about the island to Rilian when Eddara appeared in ( Read more... )

Eddara had been playing beneath the table with her animals as Sansa chopped strawberries to go into a fruit pie. Although she knew Caspian was just outdoors, when Eddara headed for the door, Sansa put down the fruit and knife and followed Eddara just in case, wiping strawberry juice on her apron as she went. (Sansa did not like wearing apron's but she liked getting stains on her dresses even less.)

She felt slightly foolish when she realised Caspian had brought a visitor, and pulled it off in the doorway wishing her hands weren't strawberry stained. "We do like surprises," she said with a smile for the new person. She noticed his garb was Narnian and she wondered who it could be. She curtsied politely and Eddara held out the wooden sheep in greeting.

"A great surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one," said Caspian, shifting Eddara in his arms. "Sansa, I would like you to meet my son, Rilian; he's just arrived today from Narnia. Rilian, my lady wife, Sansa Stark of Westeros."

"Moo!" Eddara chimed in, waving the sheep, as if she was determined to take part in the conversation as well. Caspian chuckled and added, "And yes, Eddara, you too."

You know knights, among many other qualities, are brave. As Rilian was a knight, he was very brave indeed. However, he did not entirely feel brave as he walked across the island with his father, for he did not know what to expect when they reached Caspian's homestead. I do hope you will not think less of him for his anxiousness.

A small, ginger-haired girl toddled to the door, waving about her toy animals. She was very pleasant-looking and bright-eyed. Though he was somewhat nervous and apprehensive, Rilian smiled.

Caspian's lady wife was fair, though quite younger than Rilian had expected. He did not forget his manners, bowing in greeting. "It is a pleasure, lady."

Sansa blinked and looked between Caspian and the newcomer - no she corrected herself between Caspian and his son. She was momentarily speechless. She had known of course that Caspian was to have a son - he had told her so himself from the tales of Narnia and she knew that Rilian had suffered a great trial and been aided by Jill and Eustace. But she had never expected that he would arrive here and be if she was any judge quite some years older than his father. But if she was uncertain about how she felt she was not uncertain about what was expected of her and she recovered her manners to curtsey again. "The honour is mine, Your Grace." She glanced back to the house and the part of her that was working entirely on courtesies almost wanted to offer bread and salt and wine. But she managed not to, "why don't we get in out of the heat," she suggested. "I'll pour something cool to drink." She did not know what to say to a stepson twice her age but she thought she could manage good hostess.
