"summerfest review #3" or "best guster concert EVER"

Jul 09, 2006 23:49

Last night's concert completely restored my faith in Summerfest, and of course it would be Guster who did it. My friends Katie, Mike, and I arrived at Summerfest around 7:00 and got some dinner. I split an EXCELLENT Greek combo of Gyros, Greek Chicken, and Rice with Katie. We met up with several friends of mine from high school around 7:30 and ( Read more... )

Honestly, can you (or SOMEone) please explain the appeal of Guster to me? They seem like they have a really, really rabid fanbase, and I've tried, honestly I have, and listened to a few of their songs (mostly "Fa Fa" and "Amsterdam" and some of the other singles), but to my ears, they basically sound like pleasantly bland but undistinguished chamber pop in the vein of, like, I dunno, John Mayer or the Connells or Barenaked Ladies or Gin Blossoms or something like that. Which, you know, is fine, but I can't understand all the adulation.

I'm not trying to be snarky, I'm genuinely curious. But then again, I've never understood the appeal of the Dave Matthews Band either. I like 'em okay, but I've always wondered why people go ga-ga for 'em.

I don't know that it's something that I can clearly break down, but I'll give it a whirl ( ... )

Thanks! I was hoping for this type of comment. Sounds like they really are more of a live experience, which is certainly something that I understand...I mean, I was only a marginal fan of musicians like Moby until I got to see him live, and he was just so energetic and fun that it got me to re-apprise his entire musical output for the better. So, hmm, maybe I'll give 'em another chance. :)

I'd really recommend it. Saturday's concert placed them fairly firmly as #2 of my all-time favorite bands (right behind Jars of Clay).

He could very well be older than 15, he could very well be older than me, I could tell. Now that you mention it, he probably was closer to 20. But what do I know? I'm 23 but I look 16.
