Heart, heart! Because
1. Then we definitely get to keep you
2. You get to be dr grocott, which, let's face it, is just cool
3. You CAN do it
4. You should always listen to your heart, the head gets too preoccupied with making sure the laundry is done and the cat is fed and remembering birthdays to make big decisions properly. So thinks I anyway.

You need to make a decision that in the long term you can live with. If you are convinced that Chemistry is by far your strongest point a PhD is worth it. If you think you're going to burn out with that kind of workload/money worries then a PhD isn't viable.

Both options mean a lot of work and a bit of a gamble. The PhD work is obvious, going to a Masters and then finding a job has the hidden time and costs of finding and reskilling for a different career, above and beyond whatever is paying your bills at the time. The PhD option relies on getting good enough results, the career relies on finding something in Chemistry you could take already or an altogether new direction.

My advice is to take the option you will regret the least, we will support you whichever option you choose. When you settle on an answer, ignore all the other things you could have done and go at it hammer and tong (with some stubborn single-mindedness to boot).
