Your boss is a berk. If he doesn't understand why you want to do this PhD, that's his problem (so long as YOU understand why you're doing it). I guess his assumptions come from the fact that while he realises you know your stuff, you do get rather worked up about things (apologies if that's a poor choice of words), so fears you may lack the oomph.
So the big question is, if Mr Tactfull hadn't opened his flapping pie-hole, do you want to carry on? Are you (mostly) enjoying it? Anyway, if you do decide you want call it a day with a MSc, there is still work in the field (although not necessarily around here). And the option to pick up the PhD at a later date. It most certainly wouldn't be the end of your carreer.
Y'know, I'm starting to think you, me and Em should have tea-and-mutual-ego-boosting sessions. We're all intellingent, hard-working people who constantly shoot ourselves in the foot with our low confidence. We shouln't be putting up with it.
The main reason I wanted to do a PhD is that I wanted to be an academic, and you need a doctorate really. Putting off having to find a job for a couple of years was just a bonus :oP
I am enjoying the work, even though its not been very successful for the last couple of months. That was one of the problems when he broke the news, I wasn't really expecting it... It has jumped up and down on my cnfidence agin though, in big hob-nail boots!!
I'm going to talk to OJ about it, 'cos he's back this weekend (talking to his mum on the phone atm, hence me netting :o) ), but I think I'm going to have a non-tearful chat with the boss on Monday. I just wish I didn't cry so easily when I'm stressed!
Well there you go then. If you're enjoying it, and the funding is there, and you pass that viva thing (which you will), then there's no Earthly reason why you shouldn't carry on. And I have a hunch that Mr Tactful's doubts are not that you can't do it or don't know your stuff so much as concern that you'll 'burn out'. Which is still a pile of pants and a rotten thing to say.
But you CAN do this. You always do yourself down, but the plain fact that you've got as far as you have demonstrates that (despite the tears and the stressing) you have the will and the drive and the ambition and the cajones to get what you want. So don't let the pointy-headed git tell you otherwise.
