Wow, it’s that time again….let’s see what new stuff we’ve got to mention (sound of rummaging and paper shuffling….) I signed on some Anime folks and one of the cool things they’re doing is putting on an Anime Murder Mystery. The Autograph schedule is up on the website in case you’re an autograph hound or a bookseller.
The Costume Parade has morphed into our first-ever COSTUME FASHION SHOW. The idea is a streamlined costume parade with less fuss (no skits, no prejudging, no half-time show.) There is limited seating so come early, seating opens at 630pm on Saturday with the Show beginning at 7pm. See our website for more details if you’re interested in presenting. We will have a professional photographer on site and you can schedule a photo session in costume - see the website Panel List for “Costume Photography” for more info.
Not so much Filk this year; the mini-concerts were cancelled but I’m assured there will probably be impromptu concerts in the Filk Suite. Guys! We’ve got catapults and trebuchets at the Artillery Thru the Ages on Saturday afternoon. These guys know their stuff. Girls! Belly Dancing workshops on Sunday evening.
The inimitable M.R. Hildebrand is going to talk about how Fandom was back when, which books should be fan-required reading, and the Golden Age of SF.
Wow…our Literature track has so much….what to choose…. Faeries, Harry Potter, H.Beam Piper and Fuzzies re-imagined, Online Publishing and the Future of Publishing, plus Social Media and authors. Janeen O’Kerry is offering her popular writing workshop for writers on Saturday morning. We’ll be talking about the coming DC Comics Relaunch of old titles, and Zombies in comics.
And we just gotta have panels on A Game of Thrones, Trueblood, Supernatural, Dr Who & Torchwood. The UFP will be reprising their enormously popular Jeopardy game on Sunday nite. If you have an interest in film making, you should NOT miss the opportunity to hear from a professional filmmaker, Stan Robinson - check his bio. AND….I’ve got a cool little indie film “Bikini Vampire Babes” - lots of tongue-in-cheek innuendo but no sex or nudity - screenings on Sunday and Monday evenings.

You might not know this about me but I’m a sucker for scheduling off-the-wall stuff and this year is no exception. I’ve got a Demonologist who will lecture on destructive magic, werewolves & zombies, and demonology and mythology on the TV show Supernatural. And we’ve got a workshop on how to make a Vision Board. If you’ve not done this before, it’s worth your time to check it out. It’s a very creative way to discover what you really want from life.
Readings will be done in a cozy little nook just off the hotel lobby. Check out the website in the next week and I’ll be posting synopses of the upcoming stories and their authors.
I think I used up all my science panels on the last PR…hmmmm….let’s see what’s new….Oh, yes! Dr. McMillan from the Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico is going to talk about Exoplanets, which are those planets most like Earth, and how we’re going to find them. If you need your hard science fix and aren’t sure where to find the best info, check out the panel on Sunday evening for “Finding Good Science.” And if you’re concerned about the depletion of fossil fuels and curious about alternatives, DO NOT MISS the lecture from Dr. Liu of ASU who is working on new biofuel production.
There will be a Charity Auction but I can’t tell you much except there will be more books for auction than I’ve ever had at one auction before. Keep an eye on the webpage for updates. There will be a Regency Dance. And young girls and working women will have a chance to hear from professionals about the difficulties women still encounter in the workplace and what to do about it.
And Zombie History…. Oh, Oh, OH….I almost forgot the LARP! NERO Phoenix is giving us a LARP on Saturday night - check out the details on the Panel List on our website.
All panel descriptions are now updated on our website with scheduled days and times. Start planning your convention schedule now…but, don’t forget to get that membership purchased and hotel room nights reserved to support your local convention. We need you.
I still have a special event I’m working on. Keep a watch for the next Progress Report for more details. Looking forward to seeing all of you at our con.

Look for Thief Eyes by Janni Lee Simner and talk to her at CopperCon

From the back cover:“The latest YA fantasy book from Bones of Faerie author Janni Lee Simner!

After her mother mysteriously disappears, sixteen-year-old Haley convinces her father to take her to Iceland, where her mother was last seen. There, amidst the ancient fissures and crevices of that volcanic island, Haley meets gorgeous Ari, a boy with a dangerous side who appoints himself her protector.

When Haley picks up a silver coin that entangles her in a spell cast by her ancestor Hallgerd, she discovers that Hallgerd's spell and her mother's disappearance are connected to a chain of events that could unleash terrifying powers and consume the world. Haley must find a way to contain the growing fires of the spell-and her growing attraction to Ari.

Janni Lee Simner brings the fierce romance and violent passions of Iceland's medieval sagas into this twenty-first-century novel, with spellbinding results.”

Book Drive

At each Phoenix-area convention at which WesternSFA is present there will be a special donation box near the Fan Table area. We will be collecting books to distribute to homeless children. This donation will place a book directly into the hands of a homeless child for them to keep. This is not a thrift store or a library. The age ranges vary, but we would particularly like to see juvenile fiction. Please take some time to clear your shelves and closets of unneeded books and help a child. We will take anything you bring - if you donate adult fiction, we have an agreement with a local bookseller to exchange adult fiction for juvenile fiction. So keep an eye out for the big Harry Potter donation box.
