This and that

Interesting morning. Got up. Looked out of window. Saw howling blizzard. Winced. Thought about not going into work, but thought was probably OK down in Selkirk. Got in car. Drove through blizzard. Didn't improve. Thought would turn back if snow gates closed. Snow gates open. Bugger. Drove on. Saw snow plough. Stopped snowing. Hmm. Started snowing ( Read more... )

I'm impressed mostly by #1! How long did it take?

And I'm amused by #8. Has he forgiven you yet?

It only took about two hours, but I really didn't think I would make it. We had to start at 7 am, to get up to the top before it was too hot.

As for the other one, I don't think my brother can remember - he was only four at the time. He was the youngest of the five pages, and looked really cute in a dark blue velvet tunic and white Elizabethan ruff. Awwwww.

Where is Gujerat? And where are the four corners of the Roman Empire? Stupid American, eh?

Gujerat is one of the Indian states. It is the bit north of Maharahstra (where Bombay is) and the Pakistani border.

The four corners of the Roman Empire are pretty arbitrary, ;) however I have been to the Antonine Wall, province, Britannia, the city of Volubilis - province Mauretania Tangitana (Morocco), Palmyra - province Syria something or other, and either Aswan or Budapest. Or both, in which case it's five corners.

I went to the Lebanon in 1999. It's a beautiful country, full of wonderful Roman remains, Phoenician remains. I spent a week there, and a week in Syria and a week in Jordan. Of the three countries I liked the Lebanon the best, it seemed like a very Mediteranean country whereas Syria and Jordan were much more culturally different. In Syria we had this obnoxious secret policeman tourist guide with us the whole time, who took great delight in sneering at us females for having to wear those horrible black cloaks to get into some of the mosques. I only did it once, and felt like a total sellout. (that's one of my lines that I don't cross) The Lebanon was much more laid back and friendly. And the national museum in Beirut was out of this world. They had displays of Phoenician glass that had survived the civil war - and some that hadn't. :(

To call it a Roman banquet is a slight exaggeration. ;) I got out my trusty copy of Apicius and cooked a meal for this wee girl I used to do voluntary work with as she was doing a school project about ( ... )

lol @ No. 10! What a life-changing experience. How annoying was the character of Scotty to Scots, btw? Did you ever watch Star Trek? I can't remember...

Of course I watched Star Trek! I was a huge fan and had the hots for Checkhov when I was about 11. Scotty was very funny - the engines would never stand it, captain! or we must have more dilithium crystals!. Even at the age of ten, I spotted that a career as a security guard would not be long. ;)
