Interesting angle on the ongoing wankfest: comments from lawyers. See Accio Lawsuit! at Scrivner's Error and William Patry's post at The Patry Copyright Blog. I haven't been following the wank as it just seems too tedious for words, but I thought these comments were interesting.

I have to admit, I was pretty stunned when I read about this. JKR has always been *very* fandom and fanfic friendly. And I do think I agree with those who believe this might be more Warner Brothers driven than JKR driven.

Although, I believe I read somewhere, sometime ago that she stated she had no problem with fanfic as long as it wasn't published.

Mind you, this isn't published fanfic but it certainly is all based upon her books.

OTOH, no one seemed to mind the publication of the books that delved into what might be coming up in future HP books (blanking on the name right now), and those certainly included information from the past books.

Here's hoping attorneys for the defense are smart enough to use that as part of their side of the case.

When the last book was read, I reached a "finished" state. Just can't work up any more than a passing interest. Feels weird after all the years of fascination. I'll see the movies and maybe, in a few years, reread the series.

I was only peripherally aware of all the wank from comments on my flist. I regularly read Scrivner's Error as the guy has a lot of interesting stuff to say about copyright and IP generally, so I saw the article for that reason, not because I had been fanatically following the apparent meltdown in some quarters.

Didn't mean it any way other than the whole issue is sort of whizzing by me. A few years ago, I would have been right on it and now....

I haven't been following Scrivner's Error. I got so depressed about publishing in general a few months a go (plus, Miss Snark retiring) that I got rid of most of the publishing/agent blogs I was following. Probably should buck up and start reading a few again.
