I've not been reading a lot of fantasy lately, but I was prodded into reading The Old Kingdom Trilogy by Garth Nix by my sis, and I'm enthralled. Anyone who enjoyed HP for the universe will love this. I read the first one and have the second sitting on my "to read" shelf. I thought the whole bell thing was fascinating.

He expands on the bells in the second one, and the Charter Marks, which I find intriuging. And there's a library, where the librarian's equipment consists of a whistle (to call for help) and a sort of automated homing device for use if out of earshot of other librarians. A dangerous place. Kind of like L space.
