It is no big secret that I don't care for American Idol. I feel that after struggling for 12 years to advance myself with integrity and not sell my soul to the devil, it is frustrating to see people sing karaoke on TV and take hideous contracts just for 15 minutes of fame. Artists are treated like trained seals as it is, and every time these kinds of things happen it makes corporations treat artists even worse. Like "These people are willing to take ANY contract because they want it so badly." Well I won't motherfuckers. Companies are constantly pushing the envelope of what they can get away with. Lately I am even seeing opportunities come my way where TV or Films want to control the publishing of any song of mine they might use. Meaning that they would then own the controlling interest of the copyright and I would have to clear the use of my own song with someone else because it would technically not belong to me any longer. It is one thing, as an artist, to choose to enter into a publishing deal with a company, but to sell ONE SONG to a TV network is insulting and offensive. As if in order to get exposure I must be willing to give up the song entirely. My work in songwriting is not valued to these people. Publishing is the ONE AREA that songwriters have some insurance. It is the real estate of the music business. I will never sell my copyrights. Never.
Another thing that makes me embarrassed and upset is learning that more people voted for American Idol last night than have EVER voted for President of the United States. That is truly sad to me. People who don't vote should not complain when their country is falling apart. BUT at least they can hear some cheesy singing while we go down in flames...
