Nice touch. The second that fandom hated Castiel. How dare he mess with our Sammy like that.

Yes, it was very hurtful to Sam. The show originally planned to kill of Cas, but changed their minds and gave him a redemption arc instead. The resolution of Sam's broken wall storyline focused too much on Cas. But at least Cas did the right thing in the end, and saved Sam.
