I think the point of him missing the keys in that episode was that he was totally disoriented by not having to share a daggy hotel room with Dean.

Good point. He definitely was distracted at that moment. I still saw it as something that was played up for humor, in contrast to his normally good reflexes.

It's neat when folks catch keys like that. It makes them seem so confident.

The other episode was definitely played up for laughs, but then again, Sam had his arms full so to catch keys on the fly would be difficult anyway. This episode Sam's hands were free so it makes it easier.
